A) U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1816 Type I Flintlock Musket

Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S.
Model: 1816
Type: Musket
Gauge: 69
Barrel: 42 inch round
Finish: bright
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 2915
Item Interest: Active
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 108
Class: Antique
Description:

The Model 1816 musket was the most widely produced of any U.S. musket with nearly 700,000 being produced, a large number of which would later be converted to percussion prior to the Civil War. That appears to be the case with this example, though it has since be reconverted to its original flintlock state. It shows standard markings and features with "1817" dated barrel tang and lock plate and a removable collection mark on the trigger guard. Includes a socket bayonet and leather sheath.

Rating Definition:

Good as reconverted to flintlock configuration, showing a mottled grey-brown patina with mild pitting near the breech/pan. The ramrod is an incorrect length replacement. The lightly sanded and reoiled wood is fair with some stabilized cracks around the lock and wrist, minor handling marks throughout, some minor chipping, and faint cartouches. Mechanically fine. The bayonet is fine showing mixed bright and grey patina and the sheath is fine with mild wear.

B) Artillery Style U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Flintlock Musket

Manufacturer: Harpers Ferry Armory Muskets And Carbines
Model: 1816-Musket
Type: Musket
Gauge: 69
Barrel: 36 inch round
Finish: brown
Grip:
Stock: walnut
Item Views: 2915
Serial Number:
Catalog Page: 108
Class: Antique
Description:

It has "1820" on the tang and lock, standard armory markings, "Q/B/86" at the breech, a socket bayonet, and tampion. A collection marking is on the trigger guard.

Rating Definition:

Good overall as altered (shortened) and refinished with mix of dark brown finish and patina throughout, general mild pitting, remarked proof and view marks, heavier pitting on the buttplate, stock cut/splice concealed under the rear barrel band, some minor chips and cracks, and general mild wear. Mechanically fine. This could serve as an interesting stand in for the very scarce Model 1817 Artillery Musket.
