5 Gun Auction Myths That You Should Ignore
A gun auction is a fantastic way to buy and sell unique weapons. Auctions allow collectors to find rare and special items, and explore a huge range of firearms specific to particular time periods and wars. Auctions also offer several ways for buyers to purchase, from in-person events to online live bidding.
There are many different myths surrounding gun auctions. Most commonly, people assume they need to attend these events in person, or that they won’t be able to afford any of the items on display. This is simply not the case. Let’s dive into the five most frequent myths we hear to set the record straight.
You Have to Attend a Gun Auction in Person
The idea that you are required to attend a gun auction in person in order to participate is among the most common misconceptions we hear. Although there are several benefits to attending auctions in person, we have several options for people who cannot attend our auctions in person. Absentee bidding and bidding live via the internet or phone are all convenient and incredibly easy ways to participate in a gun auction. To get started, you simply need a phone, or a high-speed broadband Internet connection, an up-to-date browser, and a computer.

A Gun Auction is a last Resort to Get Rid of an Item
Many serious gun collectors and enthusiasts choose to buy and sell guns at a gun auction for a reason. The notion that gun auctions are the last resort for someone to get rid of a firearm is simply not true. In fact, it’s often the first place experienced collectors look for guns, because they’re a reputable and safe place to do so.
Unlike other auction houses, Rock Island Auction has a team of knowledgeable and experienced specialists who carefully inspect each firearm or item before they sell it. Unlike buying from a private source, you can trust that you’re getting the real thing when you buy through a reputable auction house.
A gun auction may also offer your firearm greater marketing opportunities than if you tried to sell it on your own. Many sellers turn to auction companies because they know the company can advertise their gun to a huge client list, on their social media sites and website. Simply put, a gun auction is often a smarter, more effective way to sell a firearm.
It Costs Money to Attend a Gun Auction
Attending our gun auctions does not cost any money. Our auctions allow customers to see all the items for sale, meet other collectors and ask our experts any questions about the items, free of charge. Of course, if you plan on bidding on an item, it’s up to you to set a budget and determine how much you would like to spend at the auction.
All bidders are required to register before placing a bid on an item and will receive a bidder card upon arrival. You also have the option to live bid online, via the phone or an absentee bid, which we have outlined above.
You Won’t Be Able to Afford Anything at the Auction
Our auctions offer firearms, weapons and antique guns for a wide range of prices. Do not assume that you won’t be able to afford anything at a gun auction. To avoid being surprised by the prices of items, we suggest researching the items beforehand.
Browse our online catalogs before arriving at the auction. Also, explore our website to get a feel for what items have sold for previously. You can also contact our customer support team, let them know your budget and what you’re looking for, and they can offer their advice in terms of some items you may be able to afford.
Some of our recent auctions have featured lots of $800 semi-automatic pistols as well as $10,000 Winchester rifles. The cost of items depends on many factors such as the type of gun, the manufacturer, the rarity, historical significance and more.
Not to mention, traveling long distances to take part in a live auction is no longer necessary. Rock Island Auction has a variety of attendance options for those who prefer to stay home or cannot travel. Attendees can participate via their computer using RIAC Live, over the phone, or submit absentee bids. This caters to collectors of all levels from all different locations.
It Will Be Impossible to Find What You’re Looking For
A gun auction is an ideal place to find specific gun manufacturers and gun models, due to their level of organization and knowledgeable staff members. Rock Island Auction Company sells over 30,000 guns per year, over three different types of auctions, to better serve their customers. Each type of auction caters to a specific type of buyer.
If you’re looking for a specific gun online and don’t want to search through pages of firearms, you can also use Rock Island Auction’s easy search feature. Simply go onto our website and type in the catalog, and you can find what you’re looking for in a matter of just a few clicks.
Ultimately, there are several places you can buy guns: from consignment stores, local gun shops, estate sales, and more. However, auction houses specialize in specialty, rare, historic, or high value collector firearms.
They also provide security and accountability where other places do not; would you be willing to spend thousands of dollars on a collector’s item from someone you randomly met online? Probably not. Auction houses allow buyers to speak to an experienced, knowledgeable staff, and inspect the items prior to purchase.
