Manufactured in 1957, this pre-64 Winchester Model 70 rifle is marked "U.S./PROPERTY" with electric pencil on the left side of the receiver ring, a matching serial number on the underside of the bolt, and "28" in yellow paint on the wrist of the stock, Rear and front sight assemblies are absent, with rail sections on the barrel and receiver holding an 8x Aresnal scope marked "J. UNERTL/USMC-SNIPER/1263", and the stock has a multi-position front sling mount and a brown leather sling. A green painted composite scope case is included. Rifles in this configuration were used by the Marine Corps as both a competition weapon and as a sniper rifle, acting as the forerunner for the Vietnam-standard M40.
