One of approximately 500 manufactured c. 1861-1862. The top strap is inscribed: "Presented to/Rev. R. Howard Wallace,/Chaplain, 168th Regt N.Y.S.V./by/friends in N.Y." Includes a dark brown leather flap holster (good with fairly mild wear for its age). Also includes information on Reverend R. Howard Wallace (b. 1828) who served as the chaplain of the 168th Regiment of New York State Volunteers from February 11 to October 31 1863. They served in Yorktown, Virginia. As was very common, he became ill during his service. He was the son of the Reverend Robert H. Howard, the pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Little Britain, and acted as assistant pastor under his father and took over as pastor following his father's death in 1868 (see "History of Orange County, New York, with Illustrations and Biographical Sketches of Many of Its Pioneers and Prominent Men" p. 231-233). Weapons associated with clergymen are rather scarce, especially examples with Civil War inscriptions. Provenance: The Norm Flayderman Estate Collection; Property of a Gentleman
