Manufactured c. 1868-1869, this is one of only approximately 130 of this variation of Remington over/under derringer manufactured. The design was patented by William H. Elliot on December 12, 1865, Remington's classic over/under derringers, aka the "Double Derringer" or "Model 95," are undoubtedly among the most iconic pocket pistols of the American West. This is a very rare variation, as discussed on p. 102-104 of "Dr. William H. Elliot's Remington Double Derringer" by Drummond, Johnson, Williams, and Barnard, where this specific derringer is listed by serial number. This variation shows the Remingtons address on the left side rib between the barrels, while the Elliot's patent marking is on the right side stamped upside down. The sides on which the barrel address and patent information are located are reversed from standard models. As previously noted, only approximately 130 of this variation are estimated to have been manufactured, and the previously mentioned book only identifies 13 known examples which have survived, including this one. The barrels and frame show near full coverage floral scroll engraving which continues down the back strap. The matching serial number is on the left of the grip frame, and the bottom of the lower barrel. It is fitted with integral blade and notch sights and a pair of smooth pearl grips. Includes a hardwood case with key and fitted for the derringer, included cleaning rod, and eight included cartridges.
