This Colt Model 1849 Pocket revolver was manufactured in 1863 during the Civil War era, and features the classic "Gustave Young" type scroll engraving with beaded backgrounds and animal mask and foliate accents popularized by Gustave Young and other German trained engravers working for Colt in the 1850s and 1860s. Gustave Young and his shop were key in establishing this style of engraving at Colt. It features beautiful floral scroll engraving patterns and motifs on punch dot backgrounds, incorporating the dog/wolf head motif on the hammer, with a clamshell motif at the top of the back strap with a blank inscription panel on the rear of the back strap. "ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" marked on top of the barrel, "COLTS/PATENT" on the left side of the frame. Stagecoach holdup scene on cylinder. The attractive one-piece ivory grip features a raised relief carved "Turk's head." Matching serial numbers are found throughout, and the factory "E" marking denoting engraving below the serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard, and back strap.
