Description:

U.S. Model 1906 Cavalry Saber manufactured by the Ames Sword Company. The saber has a 34 5/8-inch bright blade, browned, iron, three-branch guard and browned iron scabbard. The hilt has a helmet shaped pommel with leather grip cover wrapped with twisted brass wire. The obverse ricasso is stamped: "U.S./JC" and the reverse is stamped "AS CO." above the Ordnance "Shell and Flame" insignia and "1906". The Model 1906 Saber was an updated Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber with an iron guard. The saber has a black leather officer's saber knot.

Rating Definition:

Very good. The blade is mostly bright with traces of age discoloration and crisp markings. The hilt retains about 60% of the original brown finish; the balance is a dark age patina. The leather grip cover and twisted brass wire wrap are in good condition. The scabbard is in good overall condition; most of the original finish is present and there are three minor dents in the scabbard body. From the Will Hoffeld Collection.
