Scarce U.S. Cavalry Indian War Holster, Cartridge Belt and Pattern 1885 Saber Attachment

Scarce Indian War cavalry group that consists of: (1) Watervliet Arsenal Model 1876 Cartridge Belt ("Prairie Belt"), (2) Rock Island Arsenal Model 1881 Holster for Colt Single Action Army or Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver and (3) Rock Island Arsenal Pattern 1885 Saber Attachment. The cartridge belt has fifty-four sewn canvas loops for .45-70 or .45-55 cartridges, three brass accouterment loops and a leather tongue billet and brass frame buckle. The billet has been neatly shortened and has several initials carved on the inside. The black Model 1881 pattern holster has two holes on the flap to accommodate either a Colt Single Action Army or Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver. The holster body is embossed with "U.S." in an oval and the flap is stamped: "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/EHS". The holster has the extended belt loop adopted in 1885 to allow the holster to be worn on a loaded cartridge belt. The saber hanger has a brass hook stamped "RIA" on the back. The straps have brass keepers and the shorter strap is stamped: "ROCK ISLAND/ARSENAL/EHS". This was the standard cavalry holster/cartridge belt/saber hanger combination used in the 1880s.

ConditionVery good. The cartridge belt shows light to moderate wear with minimal fraying on the cartridge loops. The shortened tongue billet was a typical field modification. The M1881 holster is in good to very good condition. The embossed "U.S" on the holster body is strong and the flap markings are clear. The "COLT/S&W" markings are visible on the inside of the holster flap. The stitching on the seam, toe plug, and belt loop is tight. The holster body and flap have scattered light cracking and there is some flaking and minor tears on the contact points of the belt loop. The saber attachment is in good overall condition with moderate cracking on the straps. The markings are light but legible. This is a hard to find 1880s U.S. Cavalry holster and cartridge belt group that would be a good addition to any U.S. Cavalry Model Colt Single Action or Smith & Wesson Schofield revolver.
