Description:

U.S. Navy Pattern 1889 Holster and Pattern 1889 Cartridge Box for the Colt Model 1889 DA Navy Revolver. The black leather holster has a full flap with brass snap. The belt loop is attached to the holster body by three rivets. The flap is embossed with "USN" in a double loop. This pattern holster was manufactured for the Navy by William Read & Son of Boston, Massachusetts, between 1899 and 1911. Examples of this holster are illustrated on pages 346-347 of "U.S. MILITARY HOLSTERS AND PISTOL CARTRIDGE BOXES" by Edward S. Meadows. The black leather 1889 Pattern Cartridge Box has a full flap secured by a brass snap stamped "USN". Two belt loops are sewn to the back of the cartridge box. The flap is embossed with "USN" in a large double oval. A wooden block on the inside of the box is drilled for two Colt cartridge-packs and six individual rounds. An example of this scarce cartridge box is illustrated on page 409 of "U.S. MILITARY HOLSTERS". This is a scarce holster/cartridge box combination that would be a great accessory for an excellent condition Colt Model 1889 DA Revolver.

Rating Definition:

The holster is fine. The leather surfaces are smooth and free from cracks or flaking. The stitching is tight. The embossed "USN" on the holster flap is very strong. The female end of the brass snap on the holster flap has torn loose from the flap but remains attached to the male end of the snap. The cartridge box has a smooth leather body that is free from cracks, stress marks or flaking. The "USN" embossing on the flap is light but legible. The wooden cartridge block remains in place and contains six .38 Colt cartridges. This is a fine example of a scarce holster and cartridge box.
