Documented Hiram Smith Heavy Percussion Target Rifle

This heavy percussion target rifle is without maker markings but from the included period letters it has been concluded that the rifle was manufactured by Hiram Smith of Boston, Massachusetts, specifically for Alfred Tucker of Richview, Illinois in the mid to late 1860s. The original letters written by H. Smith that are included with the rifle document the process that went into getting this special order rifle manufactured, providing an interesting glimpse into 19th Century gun making. The lower barrel flat is tapped for mounting accessories and a nearly 34 inch long L. Amadon scope, which is adjustable for windage, is attached to the top barrel flat with the rear mount attached to the upper tang. The barrel has a false muzzle. Double set triggers and spur trigger guard. Checkered straight grip stock with crescent buttplate. Comes with a bullet starter and an iron bullet mold. Heavy target rifles are known to have served as long-range sharpshooter arms in both Union and Confederate armies during the American Civil War.

ConditionVery good. The barrel has a smooth brown-gray patina showing a few areas of minor pitting towards the muzzle. The remaining metal surfaces have a mottled gray patina with minor flash pitting. The hammer spur is missing. The stock is very fine with some minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. The scope has a smooth brown-gray patina which is very similar to that of the barrel.
