Description:

German dueling pistols are particularly rare compared to those originating from England and France. This set was likely the work of Johann Diederich von der Fecht in early 19th century Berlin. The pistols have fixed sights and adjustable set triggers. They also have rifled barrels which were preferred in some parts of continental Europe for dueling but banned by "codes of honor" in the British Isles and U.S. The barrels are browned and have "V.D.FECHT JUN: A BERLIN" inlaid in silver on their top flats and border engraving at the breech ends. The barrel tangs are numbered "1" (A) and "2" (B). Lock A has "a Berlin" in script, and B has "v.d. Fecht jun." Both have border engraving, rollers on the frizzen springs, and semi-rainproof flash pans. Both pistols have full length stocks with horn forend caps, fish scale style checkering on the wrist, interesting wooden trigger guards as are sometimes seen on Germanic rifles, flared butts, and wooden ramrods with horn tips. The metal fittings are mostly blued and engraved. The pistols come in a bound case fitted to the guns with loading and maintenance tools and lead balls.

Rating Definition:

Fine with an overcoat of period applied protective varnish over an even brown finish on the barrel, faint case colors on the locks, most of the blue finish on the ramrod pipes and some screws, and gray patina on the cap. The stock has fairly crisp checkering, a thin crack between the lock screw and tang, a group of dents on the top of the wrist, minor pressure marks throughout, and isolated light scratches. The pistol is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings. The case is fair with well-worn leather covered exterior, mild wear and compression of the interior, and fine accessories.
