This carbine is featured in the following articles and books by Bruce Canfield: Man at Arms- Sept/ Oct 1994-"The Allin Conversions," American Rifleman-Sept 2003-"The First Trapdoors," and "U.S. Military Bolt Action Rifles" on page 20. Only 341 of these carbines were manufactured, all in 1871. It has the standard blade and notch/folding ladder sights, an "1864" dated lock, "1870/eagle head/cross arrows/US" marked breechblock, saddle ring on the left, "US" marked buttplate, cartouche on the left, and a script "B" in a box on the butt behind the trigger guard tang. These Model 1870 rifles and carbines were the final trapdoors manufactured before the introduction of the .45-70 Government cartridge and the .45 caliber trapdoor rifles and carbines that were extensively used through the late 19th century Indian Wars and even on into the Philippine-American War in the early 20th century. Provenance: Bruce Canfield collection.

Rating Definition:

Very good plus with minor spotting and oil staining on the otherwise bright metal. The solid stock has scattered scrapes, dents, and bruises as well as some surface chipping that obscures the left cartouche. Mechanically fine. The Model 1870 carbines are among the rarest guns in the Allin trapdoor series and are important components of a complete trapdoor or U.S. martial collection.
