The period gold damascene covers nearly all of the metal surfaces and consists of floral scrollwork, floral blossoms and bird motifs. Truly the work of a master craftsman! As a technique, damascene involves inlaying gold, silver, or copper on the surface of iron, steel, bronze, or brass. The art form takes its name from Damascus, a Syrian city celebrated for its damascened wares as early as the 12th century. Collectors prize damascene for its intricate designs and beauty, such as this piece. The top of the barrel rib has the standard factory marking "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y." The barrel is numbered to the gun. The wooden case has storage space for four included .41 caliber cartridges ("U" head stamp). Remington started manufacturing the Type II over/under derringer in 1888, and the very popular double derringer remained on the market for 69 years.

Very fine. The derringer retains 98% plus of the intricate damascened embellishment. The grips are very good with a sizeable chip missing from the repaired right grip panel. Mechanically excellent. The refinished/relined case is fine showing a hairline crack on the lid, minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear on the lining.
