Description:

1) Manufactured in 1896, this revolver was returned to St. Etienne to be disabled (firing pin cut off, firing pin hole welded/filled, barrel breech welded/filled) in 1989. The case is of hardwood construction, with a red felt lined interior and a presentation plate made out from French Corps General (equivalent to U.S. Lieutenant General) Noel Chazarain to U.S. General Crosbie Saint, dated 9 June 1992. A veteran French paratrooper, including service with the 2nd Foreign Paratrooper Regiment in Algeria, General Chazarain was in charge of the Forces Francaises en Allemagne (FFA, French Forces in Germany), and one of General Saint's contemporaries, among the top-ranked military commanders in Cold War Germany. General Chazarain retire in 1992, and among other distinctions was National President of the National Union of Paratroopers and a Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor. A certificate of deactivation (one digit off due to a badly placed break in the "3" in the serial number) is included. 2) This sword comes with a hardwood display stand, inscribed to General Saint from Jean Cot, Commandant of the 1st French Army, dated 1988-1992. At the time in question the 1st French Army was one of the top level French Army formations on the French/German Border, based out of the former NATO command center at Rochonvillers. Following the Cold War, General Cot would serve as Commander of the United Nations Protection Force, where he came in conflict with then-Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali over failure to properly take advantage of air support offered by NATO for peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The sword measures 36 1/4 inches long, with a 31 inch curved single fuller blade inscribed "Le General d'armee Jean Cot au General Crosbie E. Saint" on the flat spine. The hilt is brass construction, with a wire wrapped leather grip, gold wire portapee on a back cord, and "S/CE" inscribed on the back. The scabbard is black enamel finished, with brass furniture and one suspension strap.

Rating Definition:

1) Very good as disabled, with 70% of the blue finish, showing areas of brown patina, bright edge wear and mild handling marks. The straw-colored parts are bright. The grips are good, with wear and dents, and the case shows some dents and scuffs. NOTE: The revolver is not capable of firing, but has not been "destroyed". 2) Very good, with some light handling marks overall, and hints of aged patina on the brass.
