Description:

Only 230 Sharps-Borchardt Model 1878 Long Range rifles were manufactured between October 1877 and May 1880. Most had the standard hard rubber panels, but this one and other early examples have walnut panels. It is the earliest Model 1878 we have had the pleasure of cataloging and well earlier than any other Long Range we have cataloged (next lowest was sn. 6580). Per Frank Sellers on page 277 of "Sharps Firearms", it should be chambered for .45 Sharps with a 2 6/10 inch case given its low serial number. He also notes that the first of these rifles built, serial number "0," scored 16 consecutive bull's-eyes at 1,000 yards in the hands of Sergeant Gilder of the British Rifle Team and shows the consecutive rifle to this one on page 278 where he notes "a very early production period rifle of which there were very few made. This is one of the first group sent out in December 1877 and went to Lawrence Weber, a noted Creedmoor shooter." It has a wind gauge adjustable globe front sight with spirit level (sight insert absent), the Bridgeport address and "Old Reliable" marking on top of the barrel, November 1877 patent marked long range peep sight with second mount on the heel for firing from the back position, knurled trigger, patent marking and serial number ahead of the trigger, checkered forearm with contrasting Schnabel tip, matching insert in the curled tip of the checkered pistol grip on the buttstock, and checkered hard rubber buttplate. Also per Sellers on the same page noted above, the curl found on the pistol grip of this example was only used until July 1879 and the wood panels were an extra cost feature until the same year. Matching serial numbers are also located on the bottom of the barrel, rear of the forearm, and the wedge.

Rating Definition:

Fine with 85% plus original blue on the barrel, subtle patterns of original case colors fading to gray and brown patina on the action, minor marks and scratches, limited minor spotting, light marks and scratches, and light overall wear. The buttstock is very fine with crisp checkering, minor surface scratches and pressure marks, and a few small dents. The forearm is refinished. Mechanically fine.
