Manufactured in 1882 as a third model with integral dust cover rail and dust cover with serrated edges. The accompanying factory letter lists this Model 1876 as a musket when received in the warehouse on November 2, 1882, and was part of a shipment of with 298 muskets and 81 carbines that left the factory on November 22. According to records kept at the Hawaii State Archives, this musket is listed by serial number as a Winchester in .45-75 caliber issued to S.W. Paty, a 40 year old "head carpenter" commissioned as a quarter master serving with Division 3, Pahala Co. of the Citizens' Guard of Hawaii. A copy of this document is included. In an accompanying letter researcher John Bell speculates that due to Paty's "head carpenter" occupation "he no doubt worked for the sugar plantation in Pahala where he lived." The Citizens' Guard of Hawaii was a militia used against royalists forces who opposed the overthrow of the Kingdom of Hawaii. The 1895 counter-revolution in Hawaii was the last major military operation conducted by Kingdom of Hawaii loyalists. Around 500 Citizen Guards participated in the brief conflict that occurred from January 6 to January 9, 1895, and consisted of three major battles. Three years later Hawaii was annexed to the United States. The Guard was outfitted with Winchester Model 1876 and 1886 rifles, and records of many of these arms are kept at the Hawaii State Archives. The musket features a bayonet lug on the right side of the forend cap, folding ladder rear sight graduated to 800 yards, the number "55" stamped on the right side of the buttstock, sling swivels, cleaning rod fitted to the left side of the full length forearm, and crescent buttplate. Comes with a saber bayonet and brass trimmed leather scabbard. Consignor states it was purchased from John Hawk.
