Marketed by Horstmann & Sons, this fine quality officer's style sword was made using a blade sourced from Weyersberg of Solingen. Measuring 39 inches overall, with a 32 1/2 etched double fuller blade, decorated with a combination of martial and American patriotic motifs, with "IRON PROOF" on the spine, the Horstmann & Sons address above the right ricasso, and the pre-1883 "kings head" Weyersberg logo on the right ricasso. The hilt is gilt finished with finely sculpted decoration, showing an elaborate scene of an American eagle backed by a stand of flags between the guard and the branch, fine scroll accents, an additional American eagle on the pommel, and a white painted, wire wrapped sharkskin grip. A fine gold wire sword knot is mounted to the guard. With a gilt finished brass scabbard, marked for Horstmann on the reverse below the throat and double-sided repoussed scroll and leaf motifs on the fittings.
