Exceptionally Fine Documented Engraved and British Proofed Colt Second Model Derringer

This pistol is pictured and discussed on page 78 of the book "Collecting Deringers Manufactured by Moore, National and Colt" by L. D. Eberhart. It is listed as "Cased in its original W. WATSON & SON casing. The gun was in all likelihood purchased from the COLT agency at 14 PALL MALL LONDON and then resold through WATSON. William Watson & Son at 308 High Holborn Street, London started circa 1868 selling guns and other related items. Circa 1885 for a year or so, it was in partnership with William Hancock, this firm sold Colt deringers. Circa 1890 Hancock left this company to go out on his own, and dealt in the arms trade until 1898 when no further listings are found of him. "Standard .41 Caliber short rimfire. The original finish is silver plating on the frame, with blued barrel and checkered walnut grip. The pistol has a German silver front sight and notch in the checkering on the hammer spur for a rear sight. The top of the barrel has the standard two line "COLT'S PT. F.A. M.F.G. Co./HARTFORD CT. U.S.A. NO. 2" marking flanked by Maltese crosses. The underside has the serial number and two English proofmarks. The butt has the matching serial number. The underside of the right grip panel appears to have "1319." "41 CAL" is below the button on the right.

ConditionExceptionally fine overall. The barrel retains 85% plus of the bright original high polish blue finish, and nearly all of the rich case colors remain on the small components including the hammer. The frame has primarily a gray patina, but there are traces of silver plating under the grips. The grips are excellent with crisp checkering, with most the original varnish, and only some light handling marks. It is mechanically excellent and has crisp markings.
