Documented Alvin A. White Engraved, Relief Carved, and Silver Accented Flintlock Kentucky Rifle Made for Andrew Bourbon with Letter from the Maker

The letter from Alvin A. White dated February 14, 1985, states: "Made for Andrew Bourbon one flintlock Kentucky Rifle, barrel is signed A.A. White in script [actually "A.A.W." which was his standard signature on muzzle loaders]. Overall length, muzzle to toe -56 1/2 in.; barrel length 41-7/8 in.; .36 cal., full stock, curly maple relief carved. Brass hardware and patch box, silver inlay half-moon on cheek piece. Silver inlay oval on wrist and heart on fore end and oval on underside of butt stock." Alvin A. White needs little introduction to collectors of fine American firearms. He is easily one of the most respected engravers from the 20th century. Andrew Bourbon was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1949 and worked for a long time with White, and many of the over 2,500 firearms credited to White were actually engraved within White's shop by Bourbon who went on to become an independent and well-respected master engraver of firearms and jewelry. Some of his incredible work on firearms can be seen multiple books on fine American arms by Dennis Adler and R.L. Wilson. His daughters are also talented artisans. In addition to the details laid out in the letter, the rifle has a rounded brass blade front sight with dovetailed base, a traditional notch rear sight, a nicely scroll sculpted trigger, very finely shaped and carved maple stock with beautiful flame figure along its length, exceptional scroll engraving on the furniture that wouldn't look out of place on an exceptionally high end rifle from two centuries earlier, and a worm fitting in the patch box.

ConditionVery fine as custom made with very nice antiqued brown on the barrel, antique looking case colors on the lock, a little firing wear on the frizzen, aged patinas on the brass and silver, some minor surface oxidation, crisp engraving and carving, and minor dings and scratches from handling and use. Mechanically fine.
