Description:

Manufactured in circa 1879 by the famous Birmingham gunmaker G.E. Lewis, a maker normally more associated with big bore fowling guns. With browned Damascus barrels each engraved with a deep band of stylised foliage at the breech end and with broad matted rib with rear sight of one standing and one folding leaf, bead front sight, and doll’s head extension engraved with a shell. Border and scroll engraved casehardened action with carved percussion fences. The locks each signed “G.E. LEWIS” and respectively charmingly engraved with a charging bull elephant on the right lock and a rhinoceros on the left lock. Well figured walnut pistol grip stock with raised cheekpiece, rubber recoil pad, and checkered grip and forearm.

Rating Definition:

Expertly refinished throughout. The twist barrels retaining nearly all of the rebrowned finish, rib signature clear. Action, locks and furniture retaining nearly all of the reapplied casehardened finish, engraving crisp. Figured replacement pistol grip stock with the forend pin slightly loose. Mechanically very good (bores lightly pitted, especially at breech end). Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection.
