Offered here is a Winchester Model 1886 in desirable .45-70 caliber and factory documented special order deluxe extra lightweight takedown short rifle configuration. The accompanying factory letter (copy) lists this rifle with a round barrel in .45-70 caliber, set trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, half magazine, shotgun butt with rubber buttplate, sling swivels, sling, oil finish, and extra lightweight configuration when received in the warehouse on February 27, 1901 and shipped the next day. Includes a copy of the factory ledger. The rifle was later fully restored by Turnbull Restoration Co. to manufactured specifications including a new barrel, stock, forearm, and leather sling. The original 22 inch barrel and leather sling are included. Model 1886 rifles with special order barrels shorter or longer than the standard 26-inch barrel are scarce. Deluxe Model 1886s are also rare. As Winchester expert and author George Madis noted, "Deluxe Model 86s in the rifles made after 1900 are hard to find, partly due to the higher cost of deluxe features." The rifle is fitted with Winchester No. 23 beaded front and No. 24 three leaf rear sights. The rear sight leafs are marked "50," "1", and "2." The tang sight is a Lyman No. 2. The receiver is fitted with double close set triggers. The lower tang has the patent dates marking and serial number. Import marked on underside of barrel. Sling eyes are mounted on the underside of the forend cap and buttstock. The forearm and straight grip stock are 3x select grade walnut and feature "H" pattern checkering. The buttstock is fitted with a Winchester hard rubber shotgun buttplate. Provenance: The Wayne Connor Collection
Very fine as professionally restored overall, retaining 99% plus of the blue and casehardened finishes and limited handling marks. Mechanically excellent.
