"ax" code arms were only in production for 2 years, with a limited amount manufactured. Blade and tangent sights, with "ax/41" manufacturer/date markings on the receiver ring, "eagle/swastika" and "eagle/ 280" proofs on the rear sight base and receiver ring, and "Mod. 98" in correct script on the receiver wall. Matching serial numbers visible on various components, including the bolt and stock. Smooth laminated stock, with a faint "eagle/H" Heer stamp, "eagle/280" stamps and a flat buttplate. Includes period leather sling, "S/172" (Carl Eickhorn) marked bayonet and metal scabbard with leather frog. Provenance: The Paul Crockett Jr. Collection
Fine, retains 70% arsenal refinished blue finish with smooth brown patina on the balance, a few scattered small patches of light pitting, and defined markings and edges in the metal. Stock is very good as arsenal refinished, with scattered light scratches and handling marks. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fine. Scabbard is very good.
