Rare and Desirable Documented Maryland Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1800 with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish,
walnut stock. The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearms manufactured at the U.S. armories. The Model 1795 was based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution, and was the main infantry arm of the War of 1812. Springfield Model 1795 Type I muskets are described on pages 35-42 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II”, with the lock of this exact musket photographed on page 37. This musket has the correct Type I markings and features for the 1799-1802 period and is dated “1800” on the buttplate tang. It has the first style of lock marking with “SPRINGFIELD” in a vertical curve behind the hammer, and at the center of the lock is the shielded eagle looking to it’s right above a script “US”. Note the distinctive curls on the frizzen toe and top jaw guide used on the Type I muskets. “P/eagle/V” proofs marked on the left of the breech and a faint “US” marked on top. “MARYLAND” faintly marked on the underbelly of the stock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. CONDITION: Good with bright polished surfaces, light to mild scattered pitting, and sharp lock markings. Stock is fair as refinished with various cracks, repaired sections, scratches, and general overall wear. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is fair with mild pitting. Estimate: 4,500 - 7,000 LOT 148 Documented U.S. Springfield Model 1812 Type II Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 41 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 5,000-10,000 of these Type IIs were manufactured c. 1815-1816. Model 1812 Type II muskets are described on pages 89-93 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II”, with the lock of this exact musket photographed on page 91. The book states, “The salient visual features of this musket are the short stud-type barrel band retainers and the special upper barrel band used with these retainers.” It has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear of the upper barrel band, “1816” dated lock with “US/eagle and shield/SPRINGFIELD” marked at the center, “US” and “P/eagle head/V” stamps on the barrel at the breech, cheek cutout on the left side of the comb, and an “1816” dated buttplate tang. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked twice at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet and leather sling. CONDITION: Good with dark brown patina and mild oxidation overall, and distinct lock markings. Stock is good as modified with scattered hairline cracks, light scratches, handling marks, and an oval cutout on the left flat where a metal plate used to be. Mechanically excellent. U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Flintlock Musket Dated 1808 with Bayonet - Serial no. 4934, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 2,595 of these muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1808. The lockplate is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1808” vertically at the rear, with the shield bearing “eagle/US” at the center. The serial number “4934” and two cartouches appear on the upper left quarter at the rear of the barrel. Bayonet lug below the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. CONDITION: Very good with smooth mottled brown patina surfaces overall, some light flash pitting, and mostly clear markings in the metal. Stock is also very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches, cracks around the buttplate. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is also very good with scattered mild pitting. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000 LOT 150 Documented Whitney 1798 Type III U.S. Contract Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 43 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Around 10,000 of these were manufactured in three major variations for the U.S. government around 1801-1809. This is a Type III with rounded brass flash pan and evenly rounded rear point of the lock plate. Whitney Type III 1798 muskets are described on pages 160-163 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II”, with this exact musket photographed on pages 160 and 161. The lock is marked “U.STATES.” in a vertical arch at the tail and “eagle/NEW HAVEN.” at the center. “V” marked bayonet stud on top of the barrel, brass blade front sight is fitted to the rear of the upper barrel band, and a condemnation mark at the breech. Sling swivels are fitted to the middle band and a stud on the finial of the trigger guard. A faint large circled “US/ORR” (Robert Orr) inspection cartouche is marked on the left stock flat. Initials “J+T+R” carved on the left of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet (will not properly mount), leather sling, and wood tampion. CONDITION: Good with areas of brown patina, file marks on tang, mild pitting, and sharp lock markings. Stock is also very good with scattered light dings and dents, an absent section of wood visible behind the flash pan, a minor scuff at the left tip of the comb, a hairline crack at the left of the buttplate, and a small chip at the toe. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with mild pitting. Provenance: The George Moller Collection.
