Fine Engraved W.W. Greener 8 Bore Double
Barrel Toplever Hammer Duck Gun - Serial no. 26208, 8 gauge, 35 3/4 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured
in circa 1883. The browned Damascus barrels are each engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the breech end. The concave
rib has a large bead front sight, is signed “W.W. GREENER. 68 HAYMARKET LONDON,” and has a doll’s head extension engraved with a shell. The
     extension and is signed
“W.W. GREENER. MAKER. 40. PALL MALL. LONDON. S.W.” The casehardened
treble grip bolstered action is signed “W.W. GREENER,” is engraved with a scene of two ducks taking off from water on each side, and has a blued action floor plate, Greener cross bolt, toplever, side mounted Greener patent
safety catch with gold inlaid “SAFE,” and trigger guard engraved “GRADE ET30”. The underside of the barrels and the water table
have Birmingham nitro proof marks and reproof marks and Greener “Elephant” trademarks, and the underside of the rib has an
import mark under the forearm. The figured semi-pistol grip stock has a checkered grip, forearm, and dark horn buttplate. The
forearm has a Deeley & Edge fastener and a dark horn tip. The underside of the butt has a blank silver oval initial escutcheon.
Stock measurements: 1 9/16 inch drop at comb; 2 1/4 inch drop at heel; 14 3/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 11 lbs 4 oz.
CONDITION: Fine. The barrels retain nearly all of their reblued finish, and the rib signature is softened. The action has crisp engraving and retains 97% of the original strong casehardened finish. The trigger guard, action floor plate and toplever with nearly all of their reblued finish. The re-oiled straight grain semi-pistol grip stock has well-defined
casehardened action has carved percussion fences, and a blued toplever. The water table is stamped with “PATENT No. 3090” (Greener, September 9, 1874) and the Greener “Elephant” trademark. The casehardened rebounding sidelocks have sculpted hammers and are signed “W.W. GREENER”. It has a
blued trigger guard and border and scroll engraving throughout. The barrels are struck with Birmingham “Not For Ball” black powder proof
marks, Greener “Elephant” trademarks and “WWG”. The figured pistol grip stock has a rubber recoil pad, checkered grip and forearm, a dark
horn tip and Deeley & Edge fastener on the forearm, and a large blank silver oval initial escutcheon on the underside of the butt. Stock measurements; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop
at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 15 lbs 5 oz.
CONDITION: Fine as partially refinished. The barrels display bold Damascus twist patterns, 80% plus of the rebrowned finish, a clear signature, and were perhaps slightly shortened during its
working life. The action retaining traces of original casehardened finish, and the locks retain 60% slightly faded original casehardened finish. The toplever retains 30% original blued finish, and the trigger guard has traces of blued finish. The engraving is clear and crisp throughout. The replacement stock and forearm which appears original are also fine and has occasional light handling marks, light edge wear, tiny cracks at the tail of the forearm, and well- defined checkering. Mechanically excellent.
