Early Production U.S. Springfield Armory M1 Garand Semi-Automatic Rifle, Serial Number 17384 - Serial no. 17384, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in October of 1939, this is a very early production M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. While no documentation is provided with the rifle, it started out in the early “Gas Trap” configuration, and like most was reconfigured to the more common gas port system, as well as receiving modifications to the receiver to resolve the “7th round stoppage” issue that emerged early in production. Most of these very early Garands were used virtually to the point of destruction during World War II and Korea, and are difficult to find in any condition. The barrel is marked “S-A 4-43”, with “4” on the gas cylinder. The bolt is marked “D28287/D 1” and “R 30”, with a WRA trigger guard, “D 28290” trigger housing, “W.R.A.” trigger guard, and “SA” hammer, safety, and relief cut operating rod. U.S. Springfield M1 Garand National Match Semi-Automatic Rifle - Serial no. 5814676, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. This M1 rifle bears an “NM” mark on the left side of a “1 55” dated Springfield barrel, with additional “S”, “P”, “M”, “U”, and “DoD Eagle” stamps on the chamber area. Produced for use in competitive match shooting, the first round of National Match rifles (aka the Type 1) made by Springfield were deliberately kept as close as possible to USGI specs in order to abide the rules surrounding high power service contests; stock components were hand-selected and modestly tuned by Springfield’s armorers with none of the special components or procedures used on the later Type 2 National Match rifles. “NM/206” marked blade front and peep rear sights, with “NM/CCP” windage and “NE C” elevation knobs, “SA” marked bolt, trigger housing,
hammer, safety, and relief cut operating rod. The stock has the “DoD Eagle” cartouche on the left side and a circled serifed “P” on the wrist, and a checkered buttplate. Includes rubber sight covers.
