Exceptional Cased, Engraved and
Silver Plated Tipping & Lawden Model
2 Sharps Patent Four Barrel Pistol -
Serial no. 5642, 7 mm cal., 3 inch fluted bbl., blue/silver finish,
gutta percha grips. This is an exceptional example of an engraved Sharps
“pepperbox” pistol manufactured by English gunmakers Tipping & Lawden in the
early 1860s or 1870s. Tipping & Lawden were one of only two authorized European firms
licensed by Sharps to manufacture pistols based on his innovative design. They were part of the
20 member Birmingham Small Arms Trading Company and manufactured approximately 4,000 of the
Model 2 in four different calibers. This example has a blue barrel, silver frame, and gutta percha grips with relief
floral designs. The frame features almost complete coverage of floral scroll engraving while the barrels are smooth
and unmarked aside from some small proofmarks. The left side of the frame is marked “TIPPING & LAWDEN/SHARPS PATENT” in a circle surrounding the hammer screw. The serial number is marked at the muzzle of the barrel group on
the bottom and the assembly number “13” is marked on the barrel, frame groove, barrel catch, and hammer. It comes
in a scarce hardwood presentation case with blue baize lined interior, a compartment with two cartridges, a key, and a casehardened bore rod.
CONDITION: Excellent. 98% of the original bright blue finish and lightly aged silver plating remain. There is some
slight fading at the muzzle and on the trigger, and the barrel catch has some slight spotting and fading. The grips
are very good and have mild handling and storage marks and an aged tone. The action functions perfectly, and the markings and engraving patterns are crisp. The case is good and has mild storage wear, a crack across the lid, some slight tearing of the lining from the hammer rubbing, and some slight staining. The bore rod has vibrant case colors. This is among the finest Tipping & Lawden Sharps pistols extant and is complete with a scarce presentation case.
