U.S. Navy Contract Winchester-Lee Model 1895 Straight Pull Bolt Action Rifle with Bayonet - Serial no. 16320, 6 mm Lee cal., 28 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. This Winchester-Lee Model 1895 rifle was manufactured by Winchester Repeating Arms Co. as part of the second contract run for the United States Navy c. 1899. Designed by James Paris Lee, the innovative Winchester-Lee rifles are chambered for the rimless high velocity 6mm Lee (.236) cartridge and feature a straight pull- bolt action, charger-loaded five-shot magazine and pistol grip stock. These rifles saw extensive service with the Navy and Marine Corps landing parties during the Spanish-American War, Boxer Rebellion and Philippine Insurrection. This rifle has the Navy markings: “U.S.N./Anchor/No.16320/-J. N.J.-” roll-stamped on the top of the receiver. A Navy “Triangle/J” inspection mark is stamped on the toe of the buttplate, and a five-pointed star is stamped ahead of the buttplate tang. Winchester patent marks are roll-stamped in two lines on the left side
of the receiver. The barrel, upper and lower barrel bands, rear sight base, receiver, bolt, magazine, trigger guard and buttplate have military blue finish. The rear sight leaf spring is nitre blue. The stock and handguard are oil finished black walnut. The upper barrel band has a stacking swivel, the lower band has a fixed sling swivel, ahead of the magazine has a rotating sling swivel, and a fixed sling swivel is fitted underneath the buttstock. Fitted with the scarce front sight cover designed for the Navy Model 1895 rifles. The carbine style buttplate has a sliding butt trap door. Although the innovative U.S. Navy Model 1895 rifle had a relatively short service life it is a scarce and historically important rifle that saw action in numerous small engagements with the Navy and Marines in the colonial era that began with the Spanish American War. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a Remington Arms bayonet numbered “16159” on the butt, scabbard, and period leather sling. CONDITION: Fine, retaining 60% thinning original blue finish with brown patina on the balance and some spots of light pitting on the bolt and receiver. Stock is also fine as re-oiled with scattered light scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and scabbard are both very good with scattered light pitting and wear, and sharp markings on the bayonet. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 2,750 - 4,250

Exceptional Spanish American War Era U.S. Springfield Model 1896 Krag- Jorgensen Bolt Action Rifle with 1896 Dated Bayonet - Serial no. 96813, 30 ARMY (30-40) cal., 30 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. “JSA/1897” cartouche on the left of the wrist. Blade front and correct 1896 pattern ladder rear sight. Smooth straight wrist stock, correct brown leather sling and a flat steel buttplate. A three-piece cleaning rod is stored inside the stock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes 1896 dated bayonet, type IV metal scabbard, brass muzzle cover, Rock Island Arsenal leather sling, and wood tampion.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine, retaining 85% plus original blue and 80% oil-quenched casehardened finish with some light scratches and areas of light flaking. The extractor retains 90% plus of the bright fire blue finish with some scattered light spotting. Stock is excellent with rich oil finish, some light handling marks, crisp grasping grooves, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet and scabbard are both fine with a chip on the bayonet handle. A superb example of a U.S. Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen rifle! Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Massachusetts Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle - Serial no. 408028, 45-70 Government cal., 32 5/8 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. “MASS” marked on top of the front of the receiver. Blued barrel, receiver, hammer, trigger guard, buttplate and barrel band. Casehardened breech block and receiver tang. Left side breech end of barrel marked with “V/P/eagle head” proofmarks. Low arch breech block marked “US/MODEL/1884”. The lock plate is marked with the American eagle next to “U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. The heel of the buttplate is marked “US”. The oil finished walnut stock is marked with the boxed “SWP/1888” final inspection cartouche on the left wrist. A “T” over a circled “P” is stamped in the grip area. The rifle has a hooded blade front and Buffington rear sight, two-piece trigger guard and trigger bar assembly, serrated trigger, iron cleaning rod and smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. Includes reproduction leather sling, and period leather sling (ripped).
CONDITION: Very fine, retains 85% thinning original blue finish with scattered patches of mild surface corrosion concentrated mostly at the left of the breech end of the barrel, rear barrel band and on the buttplate. 80% darkened original case colors on the breech block with scattered light freckling. Stock is also very fine with scattered light scratches, handling marks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

Very Fine U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle with Bayonet - Serial no. 359254, 45-70 Government cal., 32 5/8 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Left side breech end of barrel marked with “V/P/eagle head/P” proofmarks with “A” on top. Low arch breechblock marked “US/MODEL/1873”. The lock plate is marked with the American eagle next to “U. S./SPRINGFIELD”. The stock is marked with the boxed “SWP/1886” cartouche on the left wrist and an “N” over a circled “P” is stamped in the grip area. The rifle has blade front and Buffington rear sights, two-piece trigger guard and trigger bar assembly, serrated trigger, iron cleaning rod and smooth buttplate with no trapdoor. Includes a “US” marked socket bayonet. CONDITION: Excellent, retains 90% plus of the original blue finish and 95% of the original casehardened finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina. The wood is also excellent with
some scattered minor dings and scratches, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500
LOT 1240 Springfield U.S. Army Model 1871 Rolling Block Rifle - NSN, 50-70 U.S. Govt cal., 36 inch round bbl., bright/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Approximately 10,000 U.S. Army Rolling Block rifles were manufactured c. 1871-1872 by Springfield Armory under a royalty agreement with E. Remington & Sons. “MODEL 1871” marked on the left side of the receiver and an eagle and shield over “U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1872” marked on the right side. The upper tang is marked with a two-line Remington patent date markings. Equipped with a blade/bayonet lug front sight and 1,000 yard folding ladder rear sight. Full length stock with two barrel bands and an end cap, a circled script “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche marked on the left of the wrist, and “US” marked buttplate tang. CONDITION: Fine with scattered moderate freckling throughout, some light pitting, and 60% vivid original case colors on the frame. Wood is very fine with attractive raised grain, defined edges, some light scratches and handling marks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 1,400 - 2,250
