U.S. Smith & Wesson Second Model Schofield
Single Action Revolver - Serial no. 4071, 45 S&W
Schofield cal., 7 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, walnut
grips. Manufactured for the U.S. military circa 1876-77 with a total
production approximately 5,934. “U.S.” is stamped on the butt, U.S.
Ordnance stamped “W” and “P” are on the rear cylinder face and
underside of the barrel lug, and matching serial numbers are on the butt, cylinder and right grip panel. An encircled “T” is period non-factory carved on the left grip panel.
CONDITION: Very good, retaining 20% original blue finish in the protected areas, especially on the cylinder. 90% original nitre blue remains on the barrel latch assembly. Patterns of original case colors remain on the hammer
and trigger guard. The grips are also
very good with chipping along a
high edge and minor handling marks. The cylinder does not lock properly, otherwise auction functions fine. Provenance:

Retailer Cased Smith & Wesson .38 Single Action 2nd Model Revolver with Factory Letter - Serial no. 35771, 38 S&W cal., 3 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, hard rubber grips. The accompanying factory letter confirms the 3 1/4 inch barrel, nickel finish, and black hard rubber grips and states the revolver was part of a 100 unit shipment on October 28, 1879 and delivered to M.W. Robinson Co. of New York City, NY. Matching serial numbers on the butt, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. The French cut period retailer case is lined with royal purple velvet and contains a cartridge block holding 9 rounds and bore brush.
CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 97% original nickel finish with some scattered minor specks of dark corrosion. Mechanically functions fine but locks up intermittently. The case is very good with minor handling/storage marks and typical high spot wear and some fading on the lining.

S&W Russian cal., 6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., blue finish, hard rubber grips. Introduced in 1878.
Pinned blade and square notch adjustable rear sight, barrel rib with the one-line address, left side of barrel stamped “44 S&W CTG,” 1 9/16 inch “long” cylinder, and matching serial numbers on the butt, right
grip panel, cylinder, barrel and barrel latch. Caliber marked New Model No. 3s are rarely encountered. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 85% plus original blue finish with a smooth brown-gray patina on the grip straps and high edge wear on the balance. 95% original case colors remain on the hammer and 40% on the trigger guard. The grips are also very fine with crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent.

Revolver - Serial no. 22955, 44 S&W Russian cal.,
6 1/2 inch solid rib bbl., nickel finish, hard rubber
grips. Introduced in 1878. Pinned blade and square notch
adjustable rear sight, barrel rib with the two-line legend, 1 7/16
inch “long” cylinder, unnumbered barrel latch, and matching serial
numbers on the butt, right grip panel, cylinder and barrel.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 85% plus original nickel plating with smooth gray patina on the balance. Traces of the original case colors remain on the trigger guard, and nearly 80% original case colors remain on the hammer. The grips are also very fine with crisp checkering overall. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 3,500

Smith & Wesson Model No. 1 Second Issue
Single Action Revolver Inscribed to Robert S. Chew - Serial
no. 20444, 22 RF Short cal., 3 1/4 inch solid rib bbl., blue/silver
finish, rosewood grips. Manufactured between 1860 and 1868. The sideplate is
inscribed “R.S. Chew/U.S.N.” for Robert S. Chew who was the aide to Secretary
of War William H. Seward who served under Lincoln early in the war. Chew was
tasked with discovering the fate of Fort Sumter at the onset of the war under direct orders from Lincoln and Seward. Chew worked for the State Department for 40 years and rose to
the position of Chief Clerk.
CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% original silver plating, traces of the original blue in the protected areas, some spotting, and mild handling evidence. The wood is also very fine with mild wear. Mechanically excellent.
