Made in circa 1690 by James Peddell Sr. of London. Peddell was made free of the Worshipful Company of Gunmakers in 1682, served as Master of the company 1703-04, and was a gunmaker to Ordnance (1685- 1717), the East India Company (1716), the Hudson’s Bay Company (1687-1722) and the Royal African Company (1721-23). A near pair of blunderbuss by Peddell were sold from the W. Keith Neal Collection by Bonhams in London on November 10, 2005 (lot 16), and it is believed that the present blunderbusses may form a true pair with one of these two blunderbusses. The brass barrel is of three stages, the breech section being octagonal to polygonal, the muzzle flared and is decorated with punched and engraved foliage. The breech section is struck with London proof marks and the maker’s mark of James Peddell and has a raised moulding incorporating a rear sight. The tang is made of iron and is decorated with punched scrollwork. The rounded lock has a downturned tail, is engraved with so-called “strawberry” foliage and is signed “I. PEDDELL”. Light colored walnut full length stock with raised molding around the barrel tang, the wrist inset with a large cast and chased brass escutcheon engraved with the portrait bust of a Roman emperor. Cast and chased brass furniture comprising foliate sideplate engraved with two bands of beadwork, heel plate and spurred trigger guard each engraved with further “strawberry” foliage and foliate finials, and turned baluster ramrod pipe. Includes brass tipped iron ramrod. CONDITION: Fine. The barrel has a pleasing attractively aged patina with clear decoration. The lock is lightly discolored with clear engraved decoration and maker’s signature. Frizzen steel, top jaw, jaw screw and cock retaining screw are expert replacements. The cock has a small fracture in the neck. The stock has numerous age related blemishes, marks and bruises; a crack in front of the lock, a chip to the right front edge of the forearm, setting cracks around the flared muzzle, and a small repair to the right edge of the forearm. Brass furniture in good condition with clear engraving. Mechanically excellent. Overall a charming and very decorative early blunderbuss. Estimate: 5,000 - 7,500
