LOT 1501 Early Four Digit U.S. Springfield Armory M1 Garand Semi-Automatic Rifle - Serial no. 9495, 30 06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in March of 1939, this is a very early production M1 Garand semi-automatic rifle. While no documentation is provided with the rifle, it is likely that it started out in the early “Gas Trap” configuration, and like most was reconfigured to the more common gas port system, as well as receiving modifications to the receiver to resolve the “7th round stoppage” issue that emerged early in production. Most of these very early Garands were used virtually to the point of destruction during World War II and Korea, and are difficult to find in any condition. The barrel is marked “S-A 12-40”, with British commercial-pattern proof marks on top, the early screw plug in the front sight base, a slotted gas plug, “1” on the gas cylinder, and “C-46000-0” on the barrel band. An additional “BMP” Birmingham proof is present on top of the receiver. The hammer, safety and trigger housing are “SA” marked, with the bolt “D28287/J 2” on the bolt, and “D 35382-0” on the uncut operating rod. The stock bears a faint “SA” cartouche and crossed cannons on the left side, with a circled “P” on the wrist and a checkered trapdoor buttplate. CONDITION: Very fine, with 90% of the arsenal parkerized finish, showing some edge wear and handling marks overall. The stock is very good as cleaned/sanded, with some chipping around the operating rod channel and scattered scratches and dents. Mechanically excellent. Estimate: 2,500 - 3,750
1941 Production U.S. Springfield M1 Garand Semi- Automatic Rifle - Serial no. 406882, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., parkerized finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in November/December of 1941, this M1 Garand would have made it to the U.S. military’s inventories right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and the formal entry of the U.S. into one of the most decisive conflicts the world has ever seen. Blade front and peep rear sights, with a visible set screw on the former and a set of early pattern adjustment drums (“BATTLE RANGE” windage and “LEFT/LEFT” elevation with closed arrows and locking bar) on the latter. Fitted with a “SA 11-41” barrel, “SA” bolt, trigger guard, trigger housing, hammer, safety and uncut operating rod, and a very rare “keystone” profile operating rod spring is present. The stock is faintly marked “S.A./G.H.S.” and “crossed cannons” on the left, with a circled serifed “P” on the wrist, and a checkered steel buttplate with oiler. CONDITION: Very good, retains 30% of the original parkerized finish with the balance having thinned to a smooth grey patina and a few scattered patches of light pitting, mostly on the operating rod. The stacking swivel has been removed. The heavily worn wood is good with some minor dings and scratches throughout and faint markings. Mechanically excellent. This M1 obviously saw action in World War II! Provenance: The Allan Cors Collection.
