surrounded by scroll engraving, long groove on top in the breech section stretching back to the barrel tang, and additional floral engraving by the “CL/horse head” maker’s marks (see page 735 of “Der Neue Stockel” by Heer) at the breech. The lock has gilt brass fittings that include a floral design wheel cover, lion pan button, and cherub masks on the dog stirrup and accent plate to the rear of the wheel. The dog has floral and bestial themed engraving. The ramrod pipe and trigger guard are also gilt and has scroll engraving. The rifle has adjustable double set triggers. “252” inventory number is marked next to the trigger plate, and the left stock flat is marked with what appear to be “X7S” and “O/518.” The stock has
staghorn inlays of various designs including rabbits, dogs, boars, floral motifs, a hunter on the left flat, and a man on horse back with sword drawn riding towards a boar seized by a pack of dogs. There are scroll and shell motifs carved on the stock behind the ramrod entry plate. The patch box lid has a boar being pursued by a dog and elaborate scroll patterns.
CONDITION: Fine with most of the gilt finish remaining, mix of silver gray and brown patina on the balance, some light oxidation and staining, some absent or old replacement fasteners, and mild overall wear. The stock has crisp engraving on the lid and inlays, small hairline crack visible above the front lock screw, and mild scattered dings and scratches. Mechanically untested.
