Rare Engraved J. Purdey & Sons 12 Bore Double Barrel Self-Opening Sidelever Sidelock Ejector Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 20085, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. The makers have kindly confirmed that this gun was completed in August 1911 for a G.L. Dicken as the No.1 gun of a trio of single-trigger hammerless ejector game guns with 30 inch Damascus barrels and weighing 6 lbs. 14 oz. The gun has subsequently been converted during its working life to double triggers. The browned Damascus barrels have a concave rib with
bead sight, signed “J.

spray of scrollwork and numbered “1” towards the breech end. The casehardened action is signed “J. PURDEY &
SONS/LONDON”
on the underside and is numbered “1” at the breech. It has an automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE” on the upper tang. The sidelocks are signed “J. PURDEY & SONS”. It features a blued trigger plate, sidelever and trigger guard. There is fine bouquet and scroll engraving throughout. The well-figured straight hand stock has carved drop points. checkered butt, grip and forearm; blued Anson push button release on the forearm, and a blank silver oval initial escutcheon on the underside of the butt. It comes in an associated maker’s brass cornered fitted oak and leather case lined in red baize with a printed James Purdey & Sons trade label, charges label, and small instruction label for Hammerless Guns inside the lid. The exterior is initialed “T.F.B.” London nitro proof marks. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): chambers proved at 1 1/8 oz (2 1/2 inches); bore diameter 9 inches from the breech proved at 12 (.729 inches) and measured .737/.737 inches; choke constriction .009/.019 inches; minimum wall thickness .023/.022; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/4 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 14 oz. CONDITION: Very good. The barrels retain nearly all of the rebrowned finish and have a clear rib signature. The action retains faded traces of original casehardened finish on the water table, and the exterior of the action and locks are bright with crisp engraving. The sidelever, trigger plate, and trigger guard each retain nearly all of the reblued finish and have some softening to engraving. The refinished wood is also very good and has a very pleasing figure pattern, crisp recut checkering, occasional minor storage and handling blemishes, and a small insert repair to the left side of the trigger guard tang. Mechanically very good. The case is fine and has a pleasing dark aged patina, replacement leather straps, good lining, and age staining on the labels.
The casehardened bolstered treble grip action is signed “W.W. GREENER” on each side within a ribbon and has a Greener cross bolt and blued toplever. The blued Greener patent side-mounted safety catch has a gold inlaid “SAFE,” and the blued trigger guard is engraved “GRADE M” on the tang. The whole is engraved with classic
English border and scrollwork. The underside of the barrels and the water table have Birmingham nitro proof marks and Greener “Elephant” trademarks, and an import mark is under the forearm. The well-figured semi-pistol grip stock has a diamond horn drop points, a checkered dark horn buttplate, checkered grip and forearm, a blued Anson push-button forearm release, and a blank gold oval initial escutcheon on the underside of the butt. It comes in a brass cornered canvas and leather case lined in burgundy baize with a black leather Greener trade label with gilt lettering and snap caps. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): chambers proved at 70 mm (2 3/4 inches); bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both proved at 18.7 mm (.736 inches) and measured at .737/.735 inches, choke constriction .023/.020 inches; minimum wall thickness .029/.031; 1 5/8 inch drop at comb; 2 7/8 inch drop at heel; 14 7/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 8 lbs. CONDITION: Fine as expertly refinished. The barrels, action and furniture each retain nearly all of their renewed finish and have some light handling and storage marks. The high quality replacement stock with fine figure, sharp checkering, and remains virtually blemish free. The case is good with minor wear mainly on the exterior. Mechanically excellent. Fine Engraved W.W. Greener 12 Bore “Monarch Grade” Double Barrel Boxlock Ejector Duck Shotgun with Enormous 36 Inch Barrels and Case - Serial no. 49484, 12 gauge, 36 inch solid rib bbl., blue/casehardened finish, walnut stock. Built on the famous Anson & Deeley boxlock action in circa 1900. The blued barrels are engraved with a band of scrollwork at the breech. The matted concave rib is signed “W.W. GREENER. 68 HAYMARKET LONDON & WORKS ST. MARY’S SQUARE. BIRMINGHAM. WINNER AT THE LONDON GUN TRIALS 1875, 1877, 1878 & 1879. MADE FOR W. RAWBONE. CAPE TOWN”
and has a bead front sight and scrollwork and a vignette of a partridge engraved at the breech end.
