Holland & Holland 8 Bore Single Barrel Rotary-Underlever Hammer Duck Shotgun - Serial no. 6035, 8 Bore gauge, 36 inch bbl., browned/
casehardened finish, walnut stock. Made in circa 1878. With round browned damascus barrel with bead sight and octagonal breech section, the latter signed “HOLLAND & HOLLAND. 98. NEW BOND ST. LONDON” and engraved with a band of stylised foliage at the breech end. Casehardened rounded action with faceted standing breech, carved percussion fence, and casehardened underlever. Rebounding casehardened back action lock signed
“HOLLAND & HOLLAND” and casehardened trigger guard. Border engraving throughout. Figured 13 1/2 inch walnut straight hand stock including orange rubber recoil pad, with checkered grip and forearm, the latter with dark horn tip and the underside of the butt with blank silver oval initial escutcheon. London “Not For Ball” black powder proof marks and London nitro reproof marks. Weight 9 lbs. 7 oz. CONDITION: Barrel retaining 60% fading original browned finish, with clear signature and attractive damascus pattern. Action and lock retaining 25% original faded casehardened finish with strong finish to the water table. Reoiled stock in good condition with well-defined checkering, numerous age related storage and handling marks throughout, forearm wood with repaired crack to left side. Rubber recoil pad hardening with age. Mechanically excellent. A nice example of an early breech loading big bore duck gun sold by an iconic firm. Provenance: The Malcolm King Collection. Beattie 10 Bore Double Barrel Rotary Underlever Hammer Shotgun - Serial no. 3480, 10 gauge, 30 inch bbl., browned/casehardened/blue finish, walnut stock. Made in circa 1864 by James Beattie, a sometimes underrated London gunmaker. With browned damascus barrels each engraved with a band of stylised foliage with spray of scrollwork at the breech end, single extractor and 2 5/8 inch chambers. Concave rib with bead sight, signed “J. BEATTIE. 205. REGENT STREET. LONDON.” and engraved with a spray of foliage at the breech end. Casehardened rounded action with serpentine fences and non-rebounding back action locks each signed “J. BEATTIE”, and blued trigger guard. With fine classic English border and scroll engraving throughout, the locks and trigger guard each with panel game scene involving pheasants on the left lock and hunting dogs on the right lock and trigger guard bow. Well figured 14 1/2 inch walnut straight hand stock with checkered grip and forearm, steel heel plate and horn forearm tip. The underside of the butt with small blank silver oval initial escutcheon. Original London black powder proof marks. CONDITION: Very good. The barrels retaining 90% older rebrowned finish, rib signature and engraved details clear, tubes thin. Action and locks each with traces of original casehardened finish, crisp engraving throughout, hammers reblued. Steel heel plate discolored, some corrosion marking, engraving softened. Trigger guard retaining 60% original blued finish. Stock with very attractive figure pattern, numerous scattered age related storage and handling marks and bruises, checkering generally well defined. Unusual Engraved E. & G. Higham 12 Bore Double Barrel Toplever Snap-Action Hammer Shotgun - Serial no. 3353, 12 gauge, 29 3/4 inch bbl., browned/casehardened/ blue finish, walnut stock. Made in circa 1875 and featuring an unusual combination of early bulbous fences, rebounding locks with hare’s ear hammers, and a double grip action with sprung locking bolt in the face of the action. With browned damascus barrels each engraved with a band of stylised foliage at the breech end. Sunken concave rib signed “E. & G. HIGHAM. RANELAGH ST. LIVERPOOL.”, engraved with a spray of foliage at the breech end and numbered “1”. Casehardened action with blued toplever and large pyramid shaped firing pins reminiscent of Lancaster “base fire” strikers. Casehardened bar-action sidelocks each signed “E. & G. HIGHAM”, and blued trigger guard. With fine classic English border and scroll engraving throughout. Figured 14 1/2 inch walnut straight hand stock with carved drop points, checkered grip and forearm, and dark horn butt plate and dark horn forearm tip. The base of the comb with small silver escutcheon numbered “1” and the underside of the butt with silver oval initial escutcheon engraved with the initials “R.D.H.”. London “Not For Ball” black powder and Birmingham nitro reproof marks. Barrel measurements (R/L): reproved at 18.6mm/18.7mm, measuring 18.6mm/18.7mm, 70mm (2 3/4 inch) chambers, minimum wall thickness .032/.030. Weight 6 lbs. 8 oz. CONDITION: Very good. The barrels retaining 85% older rebrowned finish, rib signature clear. Action and locks each with traces of original casehardened finish, crisp engraving throughout. Trigger guard and toplever each with nearly all of the reblued finish. Stock refinished, checkering generally well-defined with some softening. Mechanically excellent. Rare Engraved Thomas Turner 12 Bore “Lightweight” Double Barrel Toplever
Hammer Shotgun with Case - Serial no. 4251, 12 gauge, 28 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened/blue finish,
walnut stock. This rare shotgun was manufactured circa 1885 and features the compact action, short forearm, and
reduced section butt which are characteristic features of Turner’s lightweight shotguns. The browned Damascus
barrels are each engraved with a band of stylised foliage at the breech end. The concave rib has a bead sight,
“THOMAS TURNER. 19. BROOK STREET. BOND STREET. LONDON” signed at the rear, and a spray of foliage engraved
at the doll’s head extension. The casehardened action has a blued toplever, and the casehardened rebounding
back action locks are each signed “THOMAS TURNER.” It has a blued trigger guard. Fine classic English border
and scroll engraving is throughout. The well-figured walnut straight hand stock has a checkered grip and forearm, checkered butt with heel and toe plates, casehardened forearm iron serial numbered to the gun, and a dark horn forearm tip. The base of the comb has a silver oval initial escutcheon engraved with a crest with the motto “FAC JUSTA” (Act Justly). Birmingham black powder proof marks and London nitro reproof marks with date stamp for 1995. In brass cornered leather fitted case lined in dark green baize. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): chambers proved at 65 mm (2 1/2 inches); bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both proved at 18.4 mm (.724 inches) and measured .727/.729 inches; choke constriction .002/.005 inches; minimum wall thickness .026/.029 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 3/8 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 5 lbs 13 oz.
CONDITION: Very good. The barrels retain 97% rebrowned finish with some rubbing to finish at the muzzles and a clear rib signature. The action and locks retain 20% original casehardened finish mainly in the protected areas and have silver-gray patina on the balance and crisp engraving throughout. The trigger guard has 30% original blue finish, and the toplever has 60% original blued finish. The stock is also very good and has pleasing figure patterns, well-defined shallow checkering with some softening from handling, and scattered storage and handling marks and blemishes throughout. Mechanically excellent. The case is good with age related darkening to outer surfaces, replacement straps and handle, and age related rubbing and staining on the lining.
