Documented Montana Shipped Colt First Generation Single
Action Army Revolver with Factory Letter and Holster Rig - Serial
no. 295289, 45 LC cal., 4 3/4 inch round bbl., blue/casehardened finish, hard
rubber grips. The accompanying factory letter with the attached buisness
card of the noted late collector John Fox lists this revolver as having a 4 3/4 inch barrel
in .45 caliber, blue finish, and grips not listed when shipped on June 7, 1907 to Carl Engel of
Butte, Montana. Carl Engel (1871-1956) owned a successful sporting goods store in the lively mining
town Butte, Montana that sponsored lots of local shooting events with the Butte Rod and Gun Club.
He was also a member of the Scottish Rite Masons, later a deputy sheriff circa 1925-1931 during
Prohibition, became an insurance agent after 1931 and resided in Reno, Nevada circa 1952 until his
death in 1956. Includes a lightly tooled leather holster rig and ammunition belt marked “156/45C/34W” on
the tongue and research material related to Carl Engel compiled by John Fox. The SAA (no. 298090) in the next lot was also sent to Carl Engel in 1907.
CONDITION: Fine, retaining 40% original blue finish and 50% original case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina. Grips are good a few minor dings, a repaired crack in the left grip, and softened checkering as a result of years of frontier use. Mechanically excellent. Holster rig is good with age cracks and flex wear. An attractive Montana shipped SAA holster rig.

accompanying factory letter lists this revolver has having a 4 3/4 inch barrel
in .38 Colt caliber, blue finish, and grips not listed when shipped on August 16, 1907 to Carl Engel of
Butte, Montana. Carl Engel (1871-1956) owned a successful sporting goods store in the lively mining town
Butte, Montana that sponsored lots of local shooting events with the Butte Rod and Gun Club. He was also

CONDITION: Very good as a result of authentic use and care, retaining 20% original blue finish and traces of original
case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina. The well worn grips are fair, clear evidence of extensive use on the frontier. Mechanically excellent. The holster is good with small material lose and flex wear. A SAA showing great character obtained on the open ranges of Montana. Provenance: The John Fox Collection.
