State of New York Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1803 - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearms manufactured at the U.S. armories. The Model 1795 was based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution, and was the main infantry arm of the War of 1812. This musket has the correct Type I markings and features, and is dated “1803” on the buttplate tang. It has the second style of lock marking (c. 1802-1803) with horizontal “SPRINGFIELD” in a downward curve behind the hammer, and at the center of the lock is the shielded eagle looking to it’s left above a script “US”. Appears to be in original flintlock configuration. Note the distinctive curls on the frizzen toe and top jaw guide used on the Type I muskets. The barrel has the standard proof and inspection marks at the breech including a State of New York mark “SNY” on top. “21” marked on the upper tang. A five pointed “star” over a script “US” is marked on the left stock flat. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes leather sling and wood tampion. CONDITION: Good with scattered mild oxidation and pitting, defined lock markings, and mostly legible barrel markings. Stock has numerous scratches and dings, and some flakes, chips, and cracks in the otherwise good refinished wood. Mechanically fine. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000 LOT 3106 Scarce Identified New York Marked Bartlett U.S. 1808 Contract Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This musket is one of around 1,700 manufactured under a 2,500 gun contract by Asher and Pliny Bartlett of Springfield, Massachusetts, based on the Springfield “Model 1795” Charleville pattern muskets. They are often referred to by collectors as Model 1808s. These muskets are very rare. It is very similar to the Springfield muskets and has a “US” over an eagle and shield over “BARTLETT” at the center of the lock and “1811” at the tail. The left breech end of the barrel is marked with “US”, an oval “eagle head/CT”, “V”, and “W”. The center of the breech is “SNY” State of New York marked. The left stock flat has a “V/CW” cartouche ahead of marking “NA”, “TC” marked just ahead of the trigger, “LB” marked to the right of the trigger, “R•BEEBE” marked behind the lower tang, and “14” marked on the left side of the buttstock. The name “N.W. Howell” (no individual information known) is finely carved into the left side of the buttstock, and an “H” is carved on the right of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet, leather sling, and wood tampion. CONDITION: Fine overall with scattered dark patina and spots of mild pitting on the iron along with some oil residue. Stock is also fine with scattered scratches and dents, mostly defined edges, and crisp markings. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is in matching condition. Documented State of New York Marked New England Militia Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - Serial no. 3, 69 cal., 38 1/2 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Manufactured circa 1812-1830. This exact musket is described and photographed on pages 250-251 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” in which the book states, “The 38 7/16” barrel of this brass- mounted New England militia musket is stamped ‘NA,’‘P,’ and New York’s ownership mark, ‘SNY.’ However, it is possible that this barrel was salvaged from a state contract musket and was subsequently used in the assembly of this arm, which is attributed to militia use.” Mounted in a full length walnut stock with brass fittings and a checkered wrist. “I&H/MEACHAM/WARRANTED” marked at the center of the sporting style lock.
I&H Meacham was based out of Albany, New York. “3” is marked at the left of the breech, on the sideplate, and on the left of the stock wrist. A bayonet lug was originally underneath the barrel towards the muzzle but has been removed at some point. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet and wood tampion. CONDITION: Very good, smooth surfaces with light gray/brown patina, and sharp markings in the metal. Pleasing aged golden patina on the brass fittings. Stock is fine with defined edges, some light scratches and dents, and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very good with some brown patina and some patches of mild surface oxidation. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000

1814 Dated New York State Marked U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type IV Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 41 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Late production U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type IV muskets such as this one were manufactured between late 1813 through early 1815 using a mixture of leftover components on hand at the armory in the transition leading up to the Model 1812. The Model 1795 lock has a projecting point at the rear with an updated round shaped hammer, and is marked with the script “US” over the federal eagle and shield emblem above “SPRINGFIELD” (arched) at the center and “1814” at the tail. “1814” date also marked on the buttplate tang (double stamped). The barrel is of the shorter length as on the Model 1812 and has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle and New York State “NYS” along with “P/eagle head/V” proofs marked at the breech. Brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band. Sling swivels are mounted through studs on the middle band and trigger guard finial. Very faint script “US” marked on the left stock flat, and “X” carved into the left of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet, leather sling (one of the loops is ripped), and wood tampion. CONDITION: Good with gray/brown patina and scattered light to moderate pitting. Stock is very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches and dents, and a few small chips at the toe. Mechanically fine.
