LOT 3115
Documented U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Artillery/Cadet Alteration of a Sappers Percussion Musketoon with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 26 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This musketoon is featured on page 237 of “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume III” by George D. Moller, and Moller’s initials are marked at the toe. According to Moller, 1030 total Springfield Model 1847 Sappers Musketoons
were originally manufactured from 1847-1856. Reportedly, 228 of these were altered c. 1856-1857 to the Artillery configuration for use by military academies by removing the saber bayonet guide and lug, adding a lower stud for use with a socket bayonet, removing the sling swivels, and changing the original button-headed ramrod to a trumpet-headed ramrod. The front barrel band has a brass blade front sight on the upper strap and “W7” marked on top of the rear strap. It is dated “1855 on the barrel tang and lock. The left stock flat is marked with a circled script “WN” cartouche. “57” is marked ahead of the buttplate at the heel. Includes a socket bayonet. CONDITION: Fine with mostly bright surfaces with some scattered very light surface pitting and sharp markings. Stock is very fine with defined edges, some scattered dents, light handling marks, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. The bayonet is fine with defined edges and some patches of light pitting. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 3,000 - 4,500 LOT 3116 U.S. Springfield Model 1847 Percussion Cavalry Musketoon - NSN, 69 cal., 26 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 5,802 Model 1847 Cavalry Musketoons were manufactured c. 1848-1859. These musketoons were used by the Army in conflicts with Native Americans in the 1850s and during the Civil War. This musketoon is of the standard pattern with the ramrod retention swivels. “1851” dated lock and barrel tang. Model 1847 cavalry musketoons are described on pages 223-232 of “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume III” by George D. Moller, and his initials are marked at the toe. CONDITION: Good with bright surfaces, scattered patches of minor pitting, and sharp lock markings. Stock is also good with an overcoat of varnish, scattered scratches and dents, and some chips on the edge of the ramrod channel. Mechanically excellent. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,250 LOT 3117 J.D. Wolfe New York Marked Mounted Artillery Officer’s Saber and Scabbard - U.S. Mounted Artillery or Dragoon pattern officer’s saber marked “Sold By C & J.D. Wolfe New York” on the back of the blade. The saber was manufactured c. 1820-1840 and features a bird’s head pommel with bone grip with twelve grooves, reverse P hilt with down-turned finial and a 36-inch blade with single fuller. Includes a black leather scabbard with brass suspension bands and drag. The blade features a 16-inch fire blue panel with gold washed etching. The obverse of the blade is decorated at the ricasso with a floral spray with “Warranted” in a ribbon, the eagle and shield motif with “E. PLURIBUS/UNUM” in a ribbon and a floral spray. The reverse of the blade has similar gold-washed etching with a stand of arms with liberty cap replacing the eagle motif. The brass scabbard throat has a frog stud in addition to the suspension ring mount. CONDITION: Fine. The exceptional blade retains 85% plus of the original polish and bright niter blue finish. The first 12-inches of the blade has some scattered light pitting and age discoloration. Most of the niter blue and gold washed finish decoration remains, and the engraving is sharp. The leather washer is missing from the hilt. The hilt shows light to moderate handling wear. The hilt has a dark aged patina, and there are several small chips in the back of the bone grip. The leather scabbard is about good. Both suspension rings are missing, and there is a break in the leather body immediately below the lower suspension band. The leather finish has flaked away around the suspension bands and break but is intact with scattered cracking elsewhere. The suspension bands and drag have an attractive aged patina. This is an attractive example of a U.S. Mounted Artillery or Dragoon officer’s saber with extraordinary blade.
