 Scarce Documented Turn-of-the-Century Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine

One of only 1,911 Winchester Model 1886 carbines produced in .45-70 based on research done by John T. Madl in the summer 2018 issue of “The Winchester Collector”.

Desirable, Fine and Rare Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine with Factory Letter - Serial no. 137751, 45-70 cal., 22 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The accompanying factory letter confirms the carbine configuration in .45-70 caliber and states the carbine was received in the warehouse on March 14, 1907 and shipped on August 19, 1907. According to research conducted by John T. Madl and presented in the summer 2018 issue of The Winchester Collector, Winchester only manufactured 1,911 Model 1886 carbines chambered in .45-70 caliber. The barrel is fitted with a pinned blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. The top of the barrel has the two-line address legend ahead of the rear sight and “45-70” at the breech. Winchester factory oval proofs are present on top of the barrel and receiver at the breech. The upper tang is marked with the three-line model/trade mark information. The lower tang has the patent dates and serial number. Mounted with a standard carbine forearm and buttstock
with carbine buttplate. CONDITION: Fine, retaining 85% original blue finish with thinning to
a mottled brown.
Traces of original
case colors remain
on the hammer
and lever. There is some minor pitting on the buttplate which has faded to a gray. The buttstock is also fine with minor dings and scratches. The forend has a slight repair. A fine representative example of a Winchester Model 1886 .45-70 caliber carbine.
