Engraved European Combination Flintlock Pistol and Hunting
Sword with Stag Grip and Scabbard - NSN, 32 cal., 4 5/8 inch
part octagon bbl., bright/gold finish, stag grips. This likely Germanic
hunting sword has a 21 1/2 inch straight blade etched with scenes
of a pair of dogs pursuing a boar and stag and floral patterns on the
sides of the blade and an arrow pattern on the spine. The brass hilt has a stag hunting scene and stag on the languet, boar’s head
finial, classical figure on the knuckle guard, wild man on the pommel, and floral patterns on the balance along with stag grip panels
and a built in boxlock flintlock pistol with the barrel riding along the right side of the blade. A rare hard leather scabbard with brass drag
is included. As the theme throughout suggests, these were designed for European gentlemen to use while hunting boars and deer to finish off wounded game. They are also known to have been sometimes carried by officers in military service. They appear to have been primarily popular in the mid 18th century.
CONDITION: Fine with mostly bright blade with traces of original gilding in the backgrounds of the etching and some minor pitting, traces of gilt finish in the recesses of the hilt and otherwise attractive natural aged patina on the brass, some play in the fit of the very attractive stag grip panels which have light handling wear, and general mild wear overall. The scabbard is fine and has moderate age and storage related wear. Mechanically fine.
Estimate: 5,000 - 7,000

Very Scarce Silver Accented Combination English Screw-Barrel Boxlock Flintlock Pistol and Hunting Sword -
NSN, 50 cal., 2 3/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut grips. This is an interesting combination of a “LONDON”
marked (left side plate) English flintlock pistol with two “crown/GP proofs (no view mark) fitted with what appears to be a Germanic 23 1/4 inch sword blade with a partially unclear inscription on each side of the forte along with engraving of a boar on the right, stag on the left, and scroll designs. The pistol also has scroll engraving and has clam shell style languets on the side plates, one of which is uniquely pierced. The grip is inlaid with silver wire scroll patterns, and the pommel cap has a classic silver grotesque mask (no hallmarks). This example is interesting in that it is mainly a pistol with a sword blade attached whereas many examples have a more traditional sword profile with a pistol built into the hilt. CONDITION: Good with mottled gray patina and mild pitting on the pistol and blade, cracked right side plate at the front screw, aged patina on the silver, some slivers of wire absent from the revarnished grip, and mild overall wear. Mechanically fine. Estimate: 3,000 - 5,000
