Unique Engraved John Dickson & Son 12 Bore Double Barrel “Round
Action” Ejector Shotgun with Gold Inlaid Damascus to Steel to Damascus Barrels
- Serial no. 5237, 12 gauge, 30 inch solid rib bbl., brown/casehardened finish, walnut stock. This fine and highly unusual Scottish gun features browned Damascus barrels which have been expertly sleeved with blued steel tubes before returning to browned Damascus at the muzzles and inlaid with gold bands at the joins, each tube is also engraved with a band of stylized foliage at the breech end. This gun is listed in “John Dickson & Son: The Round Action Gunmaker” by Donald Dallas in Appendix Two, p. 269 as having been sold on August 9, 1900. The browned Damascus
concave rib has a bead sight and is signed “JOHN DICKSON & SON. 63. PRINCES STREET. EDINBURGH” and engraved with a flurry of scrollwork at the breech end and the number “2”. The underside of the barrels each struck with London proof marks and London nitro reproof marks. The Dickson
patent trigger plate “round action” (incorporating British patents 9399 of July 22, 1887 and 10621 of August 2, 1887, use number 834) is profusely engraved with fine scrollwork
and fine acanthus leaves to the fences, and is signed “JOHN DICKSON & SON / PATENT” on each side within a ribbon. The treble grip action has a blued toplever engraved with the number “2” and an automatic safety with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Blued border and scroll engraved trigger guard. Well figured 14 13/16 inch straight hand
stock including 3/4 inch black leather wrapped butt pad, with checkered panels to the grip and forearm, the latter with Anson push button release and an
inlaid number “2”, and the underside of the butt inset with gold oval escutcheon engraved with the monogram “GW”. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L):
bore diameter 9 inches from the breech both reproved at 18.5mm (.728), both measured at .730 inches, 70mm (2 3/4 inch) chambers, minimum wall thickness 0.033/0.035 inches; 1 3/4 inch drop at comb; 2 5/16 inch drop at heel; 14 15/16 inch length of pull; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 11 oz.
CONDITION: Very fine as refurbished, retaining 95% plus brown finish on the barrels and 99% blue. Action retains traces of original casehardened finish on the water table, the action and locks with an attractive silver patina with crisp engraving. Stock is very good with well defined multipoint checkering and some scattered handling and storage marks and bruises, some deep, throughout. Mechanically excellent.

Set - Serial no. 27184, 12 gauge, 29 1/2
inch solid rib bbl., blue/coin/gold finish, walnut stock. Blued Special Stahl barrels with single steel bead sight on the matted,
concave solid rib which is marked “IMMAN. MEFFERT SUHL.” in gold, light engraving and two gold bands at the breeches, and 70 mm
(2 3/4 inch) chambers with single extractor. The coin finished boxlock action displays lightly carved fences and near full coverage floral scroll
engraving surrounding a setter and two mallards on the left, a pair of roe deer fighting over a doe, a spaniel flushing upland birds on the right, and the triggerguard shows a huntsman at the ready to fire. The gun features double triggers and a tang mounted manual safety switch. Nicely figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved fittings, Deeley latch release, and horn tip inlay and round knob pistol grip stock with
cheekpiece and trapdoor buttplate with a magnificent stag on the door. Includes a leather sling and an extra matching barrel set chambered in 12 gauge and 8x57 JS which measures 27 1/2 inches with a 2 3/4 inch chamber and single extractor. Barrel measurements for extra set: bore diameter nine inches from the breech .724 inches; choke constriction .032 inches; minimum wall thickness .032 inches. Barrel and
stock measurements for primary set (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .724/.722 inches; choke constriction .030/.030 inches; minimum wall thickness .034/.033 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 3 inch drop at heel; 14 15/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs 15 oz. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 97% original blue finish on the barrels, 95% original coin grey, light handling evidence, and scattered minor spotting. The wood is very good with some dings and scratches, a chip from the left side of the forend at the shoe, and crisp checkering. The extra barrel set is very good. Mechanically excellent.
