Cased Winchester Model 21 Grand
American Two Barrel Set Double

Case - Serial no. 32201, 12 gauge,
28/32 inch vent rib bbl., blue finish,
walnut stock. Developed in the
1920s and introduced in 1931, the
Model 21 was Winchester’s finest effort
with regard to quality, reliability and
strength. The Model 21 today remains
as one of the finest and most desired side
by side shotguns. Despite being offered as a
production gun, it was in fact a hand built custom made shotgun.
Almost each Model 21 built has a personality of its own because each is slightly different in regards to chokes, barrel lengths, stock dimensions and embellishments. The 28 and 32 inch barrels have Bradley red beads and an white center bead on the matte vent ribs which are marked “CUSTOM BUILT BY WINCHESTER”. Both barrel sets feature a screw in choke system. The 32 inch barrels are 3” chambered with ejectors and have a full and improved modified chokes installed. The 28 inch barrels have 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors and improved cylinder tubes installed. Both barrel sets are marked “WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL” with “FULL” on the bottom of each barrel on the 32 inch barrels and “FULL” and “MOD” on the 28 inch barrels. Each set has a jeweled lug and barrel flats and a 3
1/4 inch wedge of delicate scroll engraving at the breech ends. The forearm knuckle and locking latch plate are intricately scroll engraved. The
milled flat action has a jeweled water table and full coverage delicate
scroll engraving. The water table is Winchester proofed and marked
“MADE IN U.S.A. MODEL 21/WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS COMPANY/
NEW HAVEN, CONN.” The sides are engraved with a small oval field
scene containing an inlaid gold setter dog on the left and the right side
has a gold inlaid pointer. The underside of the frame is engraved and
gold inlaid with two cock pheasants in a field scene. The trigger guard
is engraved in the same pattern and features a gold inlay of a dog’s
head. The upper tang has a simple border engraving with a mounted
safety and gold “SAFE”. The triple-X fancy American black walnut pistol
grip stock has extensive fleur-de-lis fine line checkering starting at the
action and extending to the blue steel grip cap that is delicately engraved and has a gold wire border surrounding the oval which has the words “GRAND/AMERICAN”. A Decelerator Recoil Pad is present on the buttstock. The matching forearm has extensive 98% coverage fleur-de- lis checkering, an ebony inlay in the tip and engraved latch, plate and knuckle. The shotgun is cased in a Winchester leather bound oak two barrel set take down case with a hunter green felt interior and leather Winchester label affixed to the inside of the lid and brass hardware. The case has a canvas traveling cover with leather trim. Also complete with a nickel oiler, four Briley chokes (skeet I, cylinder, improved modified and modified) with choke wrench, a shell case, and two nickel snap caps. The shotgun is also complete with a 15 3/4” x 12 1/2” x 5” shell
case with canvas cover. The case is oak with brass corner reinforcements, brass hardware, a leather carrying handle and two straps. The case is leather bound with leather corner protectors and green fabric lining with a leather Winchester label affixed to the inside of the lid. The inside consists of five 10 5/8” x 2 1/2” x 3 3/4” compartments for shotgun shells. Each compartment has a leather hold down strap. The case has a green canvas cover with padded lining and sewn on corner and edge protectors. Stock measurements: 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 1/2 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 15 oz.
CONDITION: Professionally refurbished to near mint. The barrels retain 99% of the finish with some slight handling/storage marks. The receiver retains nearly all of the blue with the trigger guard exhibiting some finish loss on lower tang. The wood is excellent as well
with a couple of tiny dings on the front of the forearm, otherwise light handling marks and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
The case is excellent with minor handling marks, and the cover is very good with some minor scuffs. This is a fantastic cased Grand American two barrel set. The shell case and canvas cover are excellent.
