Documented Factory Engraved Winchester
Model 21 Double Barrel Skeet Shotgun -
Serial no. 27984, 12 gauge, 28 inch vent rib
bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Blued Winchester Proof Steel barrels with
dual white bead sights on the matted, vent rib which is marked “CUSTOM BUILT
BY WINCHESTER FOR WM. E. HARBOTTLE”, standard proofs on the flats, chokes marked
“WS-1”/”WS-2”, and 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. The action displays #4 pattern engraving consisting of floral scrollwork with borders and two simple bands at either breech. The gun features a gold plated single selective trigger and tang mounted manual safety with gold inlaid “SAFE”. Beautiful, fancy figured, multi-point checkered beavertail forend with engraved fittings, rotary latch release, and ebony tip inlay and pistol grip stock with blued steel grip cap, gold inscription oval mark “W.E.H.”, and Winchester red rubber recoil pad. Included with the gun is a copy of the final inspection report listing many of the features and a date of August 18, 1966. While the William E. Harbottle that ordered this gun cannot be positively identified, William E. Harbottle Jr. and William E. Harbottle III of Dayton, Ohio are likely candidates. Harbottle Jr. was the president of Miami-Jacobs Junior College at the time this gun was built. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech .729/.729 inches; choke constriction .004/.003 inches; minimum wall thickness .026/.028 inches; 1 3/8 inch drop at comb; 1 3/4 inch drop at heel; 14 1/16 inch length of pull; weight 7 lbs 11 oz. CONDITION: Excellent as engraved and refurbished, retaining 99% blue finish with only minor handling evidence. The wood is very fine with a few scattered minor marks and sharp checkering. Pre-World War II Winchester Model 42 Slide Action Skeet Shotgun with Scarce Extra Length Barrel - Serial no. 23587, 410 gauge, 28 inch
round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1936. Single bead sight, standard markings and Winchester “WP” proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech, 3 inch chamber, “SKEET” marked choke, and matching numbers on the receiver and collar. Diamond pattern checkered extension forearm and straight grip stock with checkered hard rubber Winchester buttplate. Stock measurements are: drop at comb 1 1/2 inches; drop at heel 2 1/4 inches; length of pull 13 3/4 inches.
CONDITION: Very fine. 80% original blue finish remains with some mild edge wear, traces of light spotting, and handling marks overall. The wood is fine with well defined checkering and scattered small dings throughout. Mechanically excellent.
