Documented The One and Only Cased Winchester Model 70 Super Express Bolt Action Rifle Chambered in .416 Rigby with Factory Letters and Factory Caliber Die - Serial no. G1896693, 416 Rigby cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. The accompanying factory letters (three in all; dated: Oct. 1989, Dec. 1989 and Dec. 20 1989) confirm the Winchester Custom Shop grade of a Model 70 Super Express Sporter rifle in .416 Rigby caliber with selected American walnut Monte Carlo stock, cheek piece, express rear sight, floor plate engraved “SUPER EXPRESS,” Winchester red rubber recoil pad, combination matte and high luster blue finish and 24 inch barrel. The rifle was chambered by Jim Wisner in conjunction with the Custom Shop. The rifle was supplied by the factory with an “Ultra Grade” mahogany case and the roll die for .416 Rigby caliber. The case and factory caliber die are included with the rifle. As stated by the October 1989 letter, this is the only .416 Rigby ever offered through the Winchester factory. Also includes the factory receipt for work order for this rifle dated December 1989 and a letter from Jim Wisner discussing the chambering work. The rifle also features a hooded ramp front sight, jeweled bolt and follower, and quick release sling swivels. The Winchester box is numbered to the gun with the end label dated “12-20-89.” Two nformational plaques are mounted to the top of the mahogany case. The rifle is featured in the Spring 1995 edition of “The Winchester Repeater” (page 29) and the March 1992 edition of “Guns & Ammo” (Page 65). CONDITION: Excellent. The rifle retains 99% plus original blue finish showing a few minor scratches on the receiver. The stock is also excellent with a few areas of minor pressure dents. The checkering is crisp overall. Mechanically excellent. The box is fine with a couple small tears. The end label is complete. The case is very fine with a detached missing knob and some scattered minor handling marks. Manufactured in 1936, the first year of production. Ramped globe front sight (reticle absent), scope blocks mounted on the highly desirable medium weight 26 inch barrel and receiver, and Winchester “WP” proofs on the barrel and the early cloverleaf tang receiver. Matching numbered factory polished bolt body, early flat checkered safety, and serrated trigger. Multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with sling swivels and checkered blue steel buttplate. CONDITION: Excellent, retaining 98% plus original blue finish with limited handling evidence. The wood is also excellent with a few minor marks and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent. Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 “Africa Model” Bolt Action Super Grade Rifle in .458 Winchester Magnum - Serial no. 401637, 458 Win magnum cal., 25 inch round bbl., blue finish, walnut stock. Manufactured in 1957. Ramped hooded beaded blade front and elevation adjustable rear sight, standard barrel markings, and Winchester “WP” proofs at the breech. The straight tang receiver is factory drilled and tapped with filler
screws in place, standard markings, jeweled bolt with late safety, jeweled follower, and “SUPER GRADE” marked floorplate. Multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with black forend tip, blued steel grip cap, raised cheek piece, and Winchester red rubber recoil pad. The straight tang receiver is factory drilled and tapped with filler screws in place, standard markings, jeweled bolt with late safety, polished follower, and “SUPER GRADE” marked floorplate. Multi-point checkered pistol grip stock with black forend tip, hard rubber Winchester grip cap, raised cheek piece, and checkered blue steel buttplate. CONDITION: Very fine, retaining 90% plus original blue with minor handling evidence. The bolt is rejeweled. The stock is very fine with scattered light dings and scratches and sharp checkering.
