Ornate Relief Carved Antique Ivory Pride of Lions Cane - Starting in the 16th century, canes and walking sticks became extremely popular, first among royalty and nobility, and by the 19th and 20th centuries having worked their way down to the middle classes as a symbol of status. The straight handle of this cane has a subtle palm swell at the top with the remainder of the vertical portion ornately relief carved with a nature scene featuring two male African lions on rock ledges, a female, and a cub, as well as palm trees and other vegetation. Detailed, Japanese Signed, Relief Carved Antique Ivory Turtles Cane with Ebonized Shaft - This highly detailed cane was likely made sometime during the 19th century, during the time when enigmatic Japan was beginning to open itself to the wider world. The “L” shaped, antique ivory handle is masterfully relief carved to show five turtles basking on a log, with a small escutcheon on one side marked with two, red enamel filled, Japanese characters that are likely the signature of the artist. The handle is joined to the smooth ebonized shaft with a German silver band, and the shaft is tipped with dark horn.
CONDITION: Very fine, the handle showing an attractive lightly aged appearance with a few faint age lines and crisp detailed carving. The ebonized shaft is excellent, retaining almost all of the black finish with only the slightest handling marks, and the tip shows a few hairline cracks and light wear.
Estimate: 1,600 - 2,500

The slightly “L” shaped, antique ivory handle is masterfully relief carved in the shape of a snarling tigers head, with enamel painted stripes and eyes of glass. The handle is joined to the shaft with a “STERLING” marked silver band engraved with a “CJMD” monogram. The varnished hardwood shaft is smooth and tipped with dark horn.
CONDITION: Very fine, the antique ivory showing an attractive slightly ages appearance and some mild fading of the enamel stripes, silver showing an attractive antique patina, some scattered light handling marks on the shaft, and some light wear on the horn tip. A beautifully carved cane that would pair brilliantly with a large bore British sporting gun!
