 Significant U.S. Model 1795 Flintlock Musket Types
 U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1804 with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Model 1795 is historically significant as the first official standardized U.S. martial arm and the first firearm manufactured at the U.S. armories. The Model 1795 was based on the French Model 1766 widely used during the Revolution, and was the main infantry arm of the War of 1812. This musket has the correct Type I markings and features for the 1804-1806 period; according to “Flayderman’s Guide: 9th Edition” 1795 muskets from this time period are considered to be very scarce. It has the third style of lock marking with “1804” date vertically marked at the tail, and at the center of the lock is a script “US” above a shielded eagle looking to its left above “SPRINGFIELD” in a downward curve. “US” (faint) marked on the top of the breech and “P/eagle/V” proofs marked on the left of the breech. Replacement frizzen with an added rear surface, and a replacement ramrod. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Fair with scattered heavy pitting and dark brown patina overall, and a replacement frizzen and ramrod as mentioned above. Stock is also fair as sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches, numerous scattered cracks and chips, various absent sections, various repaired sections, and slightly undersized at the toe. 1807 Dated U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type II Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 5/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Model 1795 Musket represents many firsts in U.S. martial arms including the first standardized and official model of musket manufactured for the U.S. military and was based on the French “Charleville” Model 1766 muskets widely used during the American Revolution. Model 1795s saw heavy use during the War of 1812. This musket has the correct Type II markings and features for the 1806-1809 period and is dated “1807” at the tail of the lock with a script “US” over an eagle and shield motif above a downward curved “SPRINGFIELD” at the center of the lock. The left quarter of the breech is stamped with “P/eagle head/V” proofs. “1807” dated buttplate tang. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered light pitting, moderate flash pitting, a repaired touch hole, and some cracks on the bottom of the lock. Stock is also good as sanded and re-oiled with scattered light scratches and dings, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, a large partially re-glued cracked section running between the back of the lock and behind the barrel tang, a chip/crack below the lock, a crack ahead of the buttplate tang, and some minor chips at the toe. Mechanically needs work, hammer will not properly release without assistance. Included bayonet is fair with dark brown patina and scattered mild pitting, sling is very good with some light cracking. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000 LOT 158 War of 1812 Era U.S. Springfield Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket Dated 1809 with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 44 7/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. The Model 1795 Musket represents many firsts in U.S. martial arms including the first standardized and official model of musket manufactured for the U.S. military and was based on the French “Charleville” Model 1766 muskets widely used during the American Revolution. Model 1795s saw heavy use during the War of 1812. Type III Model 1795s are dated from 1809 to 1814 with this example dated “1809” on the tail of the lock and the buttplate tang. The lock is marked with a script “US” over an eagle and shield motif above a downward curved “SPRINGFIELD” at the center. The top of the breech is marked “US” and the left of the breech is marked with “P/eagle head/V” proofs. “V” marked on the left stock flat. “HS” inspection initials marked behind the lower tang. A few small carvings that appear to be initials are visible on the left stock flat and on the left of the buttstock. Includes a US socket bayonet (does not sit flush with muzzle when affixed) and period leather sling marked “J. C. MILLER/US/ORD. DEPT/SUB INSPECTOR” in an oval. CONDITION: Very good with scattered light pitting, some patches of dark patina, a repaired cracked section at the top of the refinished cock, an added layer on the rear surface of the frizzen, and crisp markings on the lock and barrel. Stock is good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with scattered scratches, repaired cracked sections on both sides at the tip of the forend, some chips along the left barrel channel and in the ramrod channel, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, carvings as mentioned above, and a few small cracks ahead of the buttplate tang. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with scattered pitting, sling is very good with some light cracking and age related wear. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. 1816 Dated U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type IV Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 6,416 Model 1795 muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1816. Late production U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type IV muskets such as this one implemented changes in the transition leading up to the Model 1812 and Model 1816. The Model 1795 lock is marked with the eagle and shield above “US” at the center and “HARPERS/FERRY/1816” on the tail which has a projecting point. The barrel is of the shorter length as on the Model 1812 and has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle. Brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the upper barrel band. Sling swivels are mounted on the middle band and trigger guard finial. A “GDM” George D. Moller collection mark is at the toe. Includes socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Fair with scattered light to moderate dark pitting, and defined lock markings. Stock is fair as lightly sanded and re-oiled with some scratches and dents, various cracks and repaired sections around the lock and trigger guard, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, and a repaired section on the rear of the left flat.
