Ohio Marked 1815 Dated U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 45 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 5,340 of these muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1815. The lock plate is marked “HARPERS/ FERRY/815” (the first 1 is absent) vertically at the rear, with the shield bearing “eagle/US” at the center. “OHIO” ahead of two proofs marked at the left of the breech. Bayonet lug below the barrel towards the muzzle, brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band. Sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard. The name “J W Ross” is carved upside down on the right side of the butt stock, and letter “J” carved on the left side of the butt stock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes US socket bayonet and period leather sling marked “F.M.M”. CONDITION: Good with moderate flash pitting and some scattered patches of light pitting on the otherwise bright metal. Stock is also good as refinished with scattered scratches and dents, some light chips, and carvings mentioned above. Mechanically excellent. LOT 175 Desirable War of 1812 Era U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1795 Type III Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 44 3/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This is a Type III Flintlock Musket with a brass blade front sight on the barrel band, a bayonet lug near the muzzle, “US” and “P/ Eagle head/V” at the breech, the lock plate dated “1810” and marked with a script “US” over the federal eagle and shield motif above “SPRINGFIELD” in an upward curve, “1810” dated buttplate, sling swivels holding a leather sling, U.S. inspection markings stamped behind the trigger guard tang and “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the stock toe. The Model 1795 is significant as the first official musket of the U.S. military and was widely used in the War of 1812. CONDITION: Good. The metal surfaces have a mottled brown-gray patina with pitting throughout. The wood is very good with initials hand marked on flat, stress crack at buttplate toe, minor filled repair on the forearm and minor handling marks. Mechanically fine. Scarce Robert Johnson U.S. Contract Model 1814 Flintlock Rifle - NSN, 54 cal., 33 3/8 inch part octagon bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Robert Johnson Model 1814 U.S. contract rifles are described on pages 404-407 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III”. According to page 404, “In November 1814, Robert D. Johnson of Middletown, Connecticut, contracted to deliver 2,000 rifles to the United States at $17 each, over a five-year period.” Actual delivery dates are shown from March of 1816 through June of 1819. Henry Deringer of “Philadelphia Deringer” fame manufactured a similar amount. These rifles were the predecessors of the more numerous Model 1817 “Common Rifles”. The Model 1814 can be quickly identified by its shorter and part octagon barrel as well as the smaller “stud” style retainers for the barrel bands. It has a dovetailed brass blade front sight, dovetailed notch rear sight, “P/US” marked on the upper left flat at the breech, “LS” (Luther Sage) inspection initials marked on the upper right flat of the breech, and a full-length stock with cheek rest. This example has an unmarked lock, attributed as a feature of early examples (reference lots 161 and 180 of this auction with marked locks), “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a period leather sling and tools in the patchbox. CONDITION: Good with scattered moderate pitting and dark patina overall, and a rebushed touch hole. Stock is very good as re-oiled with some light scratches and dents, some chips around the middle and rear barrel bands, some discreet repairs around the lock, a crack beneath the lock, and a few cracks at the right of the buttplate. Scarce William & Hugh Shannon Contract U.S. 1808 Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 45 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Though they were contracted for 4,000 Model 1808 muskets, only 1,100 were delivered by William and Hugh Shannon of Philadelphia. 18 other contractors also produced these muskets with multiple variations allowing a dedicated collector a large number of muskets to acquire to assemble a complete 1808 contract collection. These muskets are based upon the Model 1795 muskets produced at the Springfield and Harpers Ferry arsenals which themselves also have distinct variations and were used throughout North America in various 19th century conflicts including the Civil War. It has the standard lock markings, barrel tang marked “V”, barrel marked “US”, “eagle head/CT” proof and “V”, sling swivels holding a modern leather sling, faint cartouche on the stock flat, and “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at stock toe. The non-fitting bayonet is marked “JBUS.” CONDITION: Good. The metal surfaces have a brown-gray appearance with tool-like marks on the breech end of the barrel and flash type pitting. The stock is also good with a couple stress cracks and minor handling marks. Bayonet is fair with pitting. Mechanically needs work. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 1,400 - 2,250
