Fine Whitney Arms Company First Contract U.S. Model 1816/22 Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 15,000 of these first contract Model 1816 muskets with 1822 improvements were manufactured by Philo and Eli Whitney
Blake, nephews of Eli Whitney and under his existing U.S. contract of August 5th, 1822. Eli Whitney was originally to start delivery of his first contract of Model 1816 muskets in 1824, but suffered from illness and eventually died in January of 1825. Prior to his death, Eli’s nephews had entered into a contract with him to run the factory and took over all operations. The U.S. Government extended the first delivery deadline until January of 1826. The lock with a removable brass pan is marked “U.S/P.&E.W. BLAKE.” at center and “NEW HAVEN/1826” vertically behind the hammer. “1826” dated barrel tang. “U.S./J.C./P” (James Carrington, inspector) marked at the breech. Smooth, straight
grip stock with ramrod. Oval script “JC” inspection cartouche marked on the left stock flat. “JA” inspector initials marked in the stock behind the lower tang. “U.S.” marked buttplate tang. An “X” is carved into the right of the buttstock. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a US socket bayonet marked “S/55” and a reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Fine, retaining mostly bright surfaces with some scattered patches of light pitting, moderate pitting on the hammer, and crisp lock markings. Stock is very fine with attractive original raised grain, defined edges, some scattered dents and handling marks, a small hairline crack ahead of the rear lock screw, a crack ahead of the lock, a filled in circular section on either side of the buttstock, carving as mentioned above, and a crisp cartouche. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine with crisp edges and some very light pitting. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 2,250 - 3,500

Documented Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Type I Flintlock Musket Dated 1822 with Bayonet - Serial no. Ia92, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This is one of approximately 10,000 Model 1816 muskets manufactured at Harpers Ferry in the year 1822. Model 1816 muskets were primarily used in conflicts with various Native American groups after the War of 1812 and were also used into the Mexican-American War era and the Civil War. With the majority of these Model 1816 muskets receiving various alterations to percussion, this example appears to remain in its original flintlock configuration. Model 1816 Type I muskets are described on pages 417-421 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II” with this exact musket pictured on page 418 above the caption, “This Model 1816 (Type I) musket was fabricated at Harpers Ferry Armory in 1822. Its salient visual features are a low stock comb that intersects the wrist about 9 1/2” forward of the butt, a 6 11/16” lock, and a lower sling swivel stud that passes upward through a slot in the trigger guard’s front extension.” The lock is marked “HARPERS/FERRY/1822” vertically behind the hammer with the eagle and shield motif above “US” marked at the center. “1822” dated barrel tang. Serial number “I/a/92” is marked on top of the breech, “V/P/eagle head” proofs on the left quarter of the breech and “E 18” marked on the left flat of the breech. “IM” inspection initials marked inside the lock along with single digit assembly numbers on various components. “18” marked on the left of the cock. Faint remnants of a circled inspection cartouche and a classification stamp marked on the left stock flat. “N” and “IM” inspection initials marked behind the lower tang. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked twice at the toe of the stock. Includes a socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered moderate pitting, mottled dark patina, and defined markings in the metal. Stock is also good with scattered scratches, numerous scrapes, dents, and numerous mild chips. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is very fine with sharp edges and some light flaking, sling is fine with very light cracking. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. LOT 185 Scarce D. Nippes U.S. Model 1816 Type III Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. According to pages 426-433 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II,” Daniel Nippes manufactured and delivered approximately 4000 of these muskets circa 1877-1840. Almost all of these Model 1816s were converted to percussion and rifled, with this scarce example still in its original flintlock smoothbore configuration. “US/D. NIPPES/PHILa” marked at the center of the lock, “1838” dated at the tail of the lock and on the barrel tang, “US/JH/P” marked at the left of the breech, and a circled script “NWP” (Nahum W. Patch) inspection
cartouche marked on the left stock flat. Both of the sling swivels are absent. Includes a US socket bayonet. CONDITION: Very good with mottled brown patina, scattered moderate pitting, and legible markings in the metal. Stock is also very good with numerous scattered scratches, dents, and chips, cracks around the lock and side plate, and a nice cartouche. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with scattered moderated pitting. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750

Harpers Ferry Model 1816 Type III
Flintlock Musket Dated 1841 with Bayonet - Serial no. NSNV, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This is one of approximately 8,650 Model 1816 muskets manufactured at Harpers Ferry in the year 1841. Model 1816 muskets were primarily used in conflicts with various Native American groups after the War of 1812 and were also used into the Mexican-American War era and the Civil War. With the majority of these Model 1816 muskets receiving various alterations to percussion, this example appears to remain in its original flintlock configuration. Features a top mounted bayonet stud and brass blade front sight located on the rear strap of the front barrel band. The lock is marked “HARPERS/ FERRY/1841” vertically behind the hammer with the eagle and shield motif above “US” marked at the center. “184x” (last digit illegible) dated barrel tang. “JG” inspection initials marked behind the lower tang. Single digit assembly numbers are marked on various components. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a US socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered moderated pitting overall. Stock is very good with scattered scratches, some mild dents, a chip ahead of the trigger guard finial, a chip ahead of the lock, and some chips around the barrel tang. Mechanically excellent.
