Extremely Fine, Desirable Early Production 20 Gauge Colt 1855 Revolving Shotgun
gauge between 1860 and 1863. These arms were also known as the Colt New Model
Revolving Shotguns and are in basic design an enlarged version of the Colt Model
1855 Pocket revolvers. Examples of these limited production shotguns are scarce in any condition. This high
condition 20 gauge example certainly makes for a highly sought after Colt arm, especially when considering that it is an
extremely early gun, serial number 17. The matching serial number “17” is stamped on the frame, lower tang and buttplate. The barrel has a silver bead front
sight and is marked with the two-line, two-block Colt patent date and Hartford address legend. The frame is stamped “COLT’S PATENT/+/Nov. 24th 1857” on the left side. One of the cylinder flutes is stamped “PATENTED SEPT. 10TH 1850.” The left side of the trigger guard is marked “60 CAL” (20 gauge) above a “K” Colt inspector mark. The smooth forearm is fitted with a German silver cap and wedge escutcheons. The smooth straight grip stock is fitted with a plain iron shotgun buttplate. A German silver tipped cleaning rod is included.
CONDITION: Exceptionally fine. The barrel retains 90% plus original blue
finish. The frame retains 80% bright original high polish blue finish. 50%
original blue remains on the cylinder. Traces of original blue
finish remain on the buttplate and trigger guard, otherwise
a smooth brown patina. Slight hints of original case colors
remain on the hammer and loading lever. The wood is fine
with some chipping at the upper tang, a few hairline stress
lines and minor handling marks. Mechanically needs work as
cylinder does not lock properly when action is cycled. This
Colt Model 1855 Revolving Shotgun no. 17 is an extremely
early production, exceptional example to one of Colt’s most
sought after antique long guns.
