Desirable Pair of Engraved and Gilt 18th
Century Flintlock Holster Pistols
-A) Flintlock Holster Pistol - NSN, 59 cal., 13 3/4
inch part octagon bbl., gold/blue finish, hardwood
stock. These Continental European pistols, possibly
Austrian, have fire blued smoothbore barrels with
rounded gilt brass front sights, sighting flats, and
gilt accented scroll and floral engraving that also includes a bust of a female figure with a pair of rampant lion supporters. The lock plates and furniture are gilt brass and feature mainly scroll and floral engraving patterns. The ornate sideplates have pierced designs and include fish/ dolphin motifs. The nicely figured stocks have some attractive raised molding.
CONDITION: Fine with 40% original blue finish remaining on the barrel, much of the original
gilt finish remaining in the engraving and in the more protected areas of the lock and furniture, attractive aged patina on the exposed brass, and generally minor overall wear including some faint oxidation. The stock is fair and has repairs in the forend and wrist, a few thin cracks, occasional dings and scratches, some small chips and flakes at the edges, and general moderate overall wear. Mechanically fine.
B) Flintlock Holster Pistol - NSN, 59 cal., 13 3/4 inch
round bbl., blue/gilt finish, hardwood stock. See “A.”
CONDITION: Fine with 60% original blue finish
remaining on the barrel, much of the original gilt
finish remaining in the engraving and in the more
protected areas of the lock and furniture, attractive
aged patina on the exposed brass, and generally minor
overall wear including some faint oxidation. The stoc
is good and has repairs in the wrist, mild dings and
scratches, some small chips and flakes at the edges,
and general moderate overall wear.
Mechanically fine.
