   LOT 1650
U.S. Marlin-Rockwell Model 1918 Vehicular Machine Gun, Class III/NFA DEWAT C&R Machine Gun - Serial no. 1875, 30-06 cal., 24 inch round bbl., blue
finish, walnut grips. A late stage refinement of the Colt-Browning 1895 “Potato Digger” machine gun, the Marlin 1918 discarded the signature toggle arm gas
mechanism in favor of
a more conventional
piston running parallel
to the bore. Reasonably light for a belt-fed
weapon of the era, the 1918 was a success
as an aircraft weapon, where it could be used
in both flexible defensive mounts as well as fired forward through propellers with a
synchronization gear. Often fitted with an aluminum cooling shroud, the shroud has been removed from
this example, with the 5-line address and inspection marks on the receiver, matching serial number on the barrel, and the partial synchronization hardware on top of the
receiver with “U.S. CAL..30” prominently marked on the side. A charging handle is mounted to the right side of the receiver, with a smooth pair of
hardwood panels on the pistol grip.
CONDITION: Fine as deactivated, with about 70% of the original dark blue finish, showing a number of scuffs and dings, areas of gray and brown patina, and scattered spotting. The barrel has been welded to the receiver, the chamber welded closed, and a filled-in cut made on the right side of the chamber; the bolt has not been welded to the breech face, and can be cycled, though the hammer fails to catch at full cock and the pistol grip assembly is not secured to the receiver. NOTE: This is a registered DEWAT weapon with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), as a National Firearms Act (NFA) weapon, that is fully transferable. It has been classified as a Curio or Relic as defined in 27 CFR, 478.11. These weapons are still subject to the provisions of 18 U.S.C. Chapter 44 and 27 CFR part 478.
Estimate: 7,500 - 12,000
LOT 1651 Hotchkiss Model 1914 Medium Machine Gun with Tripod, Class III/NFA C&R DEWAT Registered Machine Gun - Serial no. 43179, 8 mm cal., 31 inch round bbl., blue finish, brass grips. An evolution of an Austrian design, the French-made Hotchkiss gun was a significant deviation from the Maxim and its copies and imitators, using a quick-detachable air-cooled barrel, a piston-driven gas operation and firing from an open bolt, all of which would go on to be common features in medium and light machine guns. Additionally, the feed mechanism used rigid brass plates instead of the canvas belts that became the de-facto standard until the disintegrating belt was introduced; a lone operator could feed in these plates on their own, with the bolt locking back automatically when the plate was empty, a loading team could link plates together as they were fired for continuous discharge, or a series of hinged, linked plates could be used for vehicle gunners. The Hotchkiss Mle 1914 officially became the standard French infantry machine gun in late 1917, and 7,000 of these chambered in 8mm Lebel were also used by the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) overseas in France during World War I. As well as being an inspiration for the next wave of machine guns, the Hotchkiss itself would be licensed or copied by the Americans, Chinese and Japanese. Blade front and adjustable rear sights. The barrel is fitted with a set of 5 thick cooling fins at the breech and a hand-adjustable gas port assembly at the underside. The right side of the frame bears the serial number and “1918” production date, and the left is marked with the French nomenclature and patent markings. A brass pistol grip is fitted to the underside and a steel maneuvering spade grip on the rear. Absent bolt body and internals. Includes a tripod. CONDITION: Good as deactivated, with traces of the original blue finish in protected areas and brown patina mixed with scattered moderate corrosion throughout. The barrel has been welded to the receiver, the chamber welded closed, the bolt is absent but the gas piston assembly can be cycled. Included tripod is good, retaining 30% of its original green paint mostly concentrated on the yoke with some chips and smooth brown patina on the balance. Estimate: 3,500 - 6,500
