Documented J.W. White Connecticut Militia Pattern Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This musket is featured and discussed on p. 211 and 212 of “American Military Shoulder Arms, Volume II: From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period” by George Moller. The majority of these New England militia pattern muskets were issued in the states in which they were manufactured. The furniture on this example is made up primarily of Model 1795 and Model 1816 pattern iron fittings, some of which may have been re-purposed. The barrel appears to have previously been from a Type III Model 1816, having “US/NWP/P” on the upper left, faint “J.W. WHITE/HEBRON CT” marking on top, partial “1836” date on the tang, and a bayonet stud on top of the at the muzzle. The lightly engraved commercial lock is marked “J. COOPER” at the center. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection marking on the toe. Includes an unmarked socket bayonet with a visible splice/repair, Watervliet Arsenal leather sling, and wood tampion. CONDITION: Very good, showing mostly a bright grey patina, some vice marks on the left of the barrel at the breech, some light pitting mostly around the pan and on the buttplate, and some of the marking slightly softened. The re-oiled wood is also fine with minor dings and scratches scattered throughout. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is fair, sling is very good. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750 LOT 1119 Documented 1818 Dated U.S. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 Type IV Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Approximately 9,892 Model 1795 muskets were manufactured by Harpers Ferry in the year 1818. Harpers Ferry Model 1795 flintlock muskets are described on pages 62-73 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”, with this exact musket pictured on pages 71 and its lock pictured on page 73. The first picture caption on page 71 states, “Harpers Ferry produced Model 1795 muskets until the introduction of the Model 1816 musket at that armory in 1819. This 1818-dated example has a 42” barrel and the new-style flat-surfaced barrel bands, which were introduced into the production of muskets in 1816.” The second picture caption on page 73 states, “A Comparison of this 1818-dated lock with the previously illustrated locks shows that it underwent few visual changes throughout production of the Model 1795 musket. The parallel-sided, round-edged trigger guard was introduced into the production of Harpers Ferry muskets in 1811.”The Model 1795 lock is marked with the eagle and shield above “US” at the center and “HARPERS/FERRY/1818” on the tail which has a projecting point. The barrel is of the shorter 42 inch length and has a bayonet stud on top near the muzzle. Marked with “eagle/P” and “US” sunken oval proofs at the left of the breech. Brass blade front sight on the rear strap of the front barrel band, sling swivels on the middle band and ahead of the trigger guard, and a trumpet head ramrod. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet and period leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered light pitting and gray/brown patina. Stock is very good as lightly sanded and re-oiled with some light scratches and dents, some chips in the ramrod channel, a mild gouge on the right of the forend ahead of the rear barrel band, and a chip/crack ahead of the rear lock screw. Mechanically excellent. Included bayonet is good with brown patina, scattered light pitting, and a crack on the socket, sling is good with some cracking and age related wear. Estimate: 2,000 - 3,000 LOT 1120 Elisha Buell Connecticut State Militia Attributed Flintlock Musket with Bayonet - NSN, 69 cal., 42 1/4 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. This Elisha Buell flintlock musket is attributed as being made for the Connecticut militia circa 1815-1820, with a few different variants of his muskets known. “Eagle/MARLBOROUGH” marked at the center of the lock and “E. BUELL” at the tail of the lock. Information on Elisha Buell can be found on pages 202-203 and 209-210 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II”. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes socket bayonet and reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Very good with mottled brown patina overall, some scattered light pitting, and mostly legible lock markings. Stock is also very good as re-oiled with some scratches, a chip above the front band spring, a crack ahead of the trigger guard finial, cracks ahead of and above the side plate, a chip on the left flat, and a chip ahead of the lock. Mechanically fine. Included bayonet is good with mottled brown patina and scattered patches of moderate pitting. Provenance: The George Moller Collection. Estimate: 1,800 - 2,750
LOT 1121 Documented State of Maryland Contract Daniel Henkels Flintlock Musket - NSN, 69 cal., 44 1/8 inch round bbl., bright finish, walnut stock. Daniel Henkels Maryland contract muskets are described on pages 216-217 of George D. Moller’s book “American Military Shoulder Arms Volume II” with this exact musket pictured on both pages. The first picture caption states, “This Daniel Henkels musket was delivered under J. Henry’s contract with the State of Maryland in the 1814-1815 period. Except for its markings, it is similar to the muskets delivered under Henkels’s 1815 U.S. contract. This musket has some features of the Model 1795 (Type IV) Springfield Armory muskets and other features of 1808 U.S. contract muskets delivered by makers in the Maryland-Pennsylvania area.”“1814”dated at the tail of the lock and “D. HENKELS” marked in an arch above “PHILa” marked at the center. A raised “P” in a sunken oval marked on the top left of the breech. “GDM” (George D. Moller) collection initials marked at the toe of the stock. Includes a reproduction leather sling. CONDITION: Good with scattered light mottled brown patina and light pitting with a patch of dings on the barrel. Stock is very good as re-oiled with scattered dents and scratches, a crack above the middle band spring, a crack ahead of the rear lock screw, and cracks on either side of the lock.
